I locked my helmet to my ZX-6R at Bike week in Daytona. I realized after at least two hours that I had left my keys dangling under the tail section of my bike. It was in a parking lot backed into a space right next to the sidewalk. When I realized what I had done I was about 10 blocks away and I pushed my way through a sea of drunk and dumb! As I approached my bike I could see my keys glistening in the sunlight from across the street.

It's actually kinda nice running through a crowded street wearing full gear. For some reason it's socially weird to do it: people stare It's nice to just let go, and do it anyway.

Left my keys in the bike the first long ride I took.. stopped at a State Park and went to the outhouse on the other side of parking lot. I then took in the sights for about 15mins.

Got back near my bike and started looking for keys in pocket, and freaked when I couldn't find them, ran back to outhouse to look (not there) so ran back to bike. At this time there where 3 other bikes parked near mine, all 3 of them 2 up. Only thing going through my mind at the time was me picturing one of those passengers on the other bikes just taking off on mine. Luckily for me they did notice the key in ignition and sat there watchin the bike till I got back, even asked me a few questions to verify it was my bike, but the helmet in my hands kinda gave it away.

Since then I still have left my keys in my bike at the house overnight... I have since added a orange cord to the key that sits on my wrist when on bike... this way if I go to get off bike w that still on, I can go no further than standing next to it

That safe?

I was thinking of adding a big and bright keyring to my keys, but then I realised, if even then I still forget my keys, the bright keyring will draw thieves to my bike like flies to a light.

From what I understand, most thieves take our bikes by picking them up and physically tossing them into the back of a truck. At that point, the only things keys in the ignition would do is give the thief an extra set of parts to sell, mainly the locks, and even then the thief could get a code key cut from the other locks anyway.

But, that being said, I don't leave my key in the ignition out of habit. Early on there were a couple of times I "lost" my key, only to find it in the seat lock after half an hour of frantic searching.

I've forgotten the key in the ignition twice while parked at work. And both times it was due to me being distracted from my normal "dismount" routine.

My biggest noob mistake relating to the key was when I pulled it out of the ignition and dropped it down between the steering fork.

It happened within a month of me getting the bike and I was freaking that the key would somehow fall into the engine.

ALMOST as bad as pushing your bike 4-5 times because it ran out of gas
