Lesson learned, this is why my tank now has the black two-tone paint job. The black paint is engine enamel with engine enamel clear. It is labeled to resist automotive fluids, hopefully it holds up better.

My gas cap leaked while laying on its side during my valve adjustment. Made the paint "wet" again like it was just applied..

The hardest part of painting in my back yard was trying to control over spray, especially when applying the clear coat.

If the over spray got onto the part after it was cleared it would feel rough, and "dry", not smooth like it should.

I had to paint differently according to the wind direction and painted each part separately, the second time.

there is only one spray paint (actually clear coat) that fuel will not eat, It is 2K, or K2 which is a 2 part urethane, with the hardner in the bottom of the can, and it mixes in the can. Other than that, nothing in a can will resist paint.
