Ouch! Right in the feelings!

On a side note, Why would someone not have antifreeze in their bike???? You should never do that.

So you guys like the 50/50 pre-mix antifreeze? I've always bought the pure stuff and mixed it myself.

The 50/50 pre-mix is half water and costs almost as much as the pure antifreeze.

I've always been partial to the full strength stuff and then mix to the temperature protection desired. Example: I live in South Carolina. Maybe once every 10 years, we see a 0 or -1 temperature reading. Why do I need to have protection down to -34 or -54 from premix? Water also transfers heat better than the glycol, so why limit my cooling capacity with too much glycol?

I understand many newer engines are built with the idea of having the lubricants in the anti-freeze in there all the time. Hey, it saves money on better bearings and seals. Also, aluminum reacts and corrodes more with water than the cast iron blocks do. So, the corrosion inhibitors are more necessary.

The big reason premix is 75% the cost of pure is profit. A gallon of distilled water is $1.19 at the store. Put half of a $6 gallon of glycol and half a dollar worth of water together in a jug...call it premixed...people will buy it for the convenience. Price this jug at $6.98 for the trouble of mixing it and price the pure at $9.49 or so since you want the pure thing and you're getting twice as much anti-freeze. Now, you have almost doubled your profit on the same gallon of glycol and people think they are getting a great deal.

Now let's talk about oil being $1.25 a gallon but it costs us lowly consumers $4.00 per quart. Talk about profit!

I agree with the OP's quest of finding out how to change it correctly and what to use. If you're gonna do it, might as well do it right especially considering your bike is depending on it.

20 deg is plenty to freeze up a small engine and especially a radiator and lines. The expansion from a few hours at 20 deg considering the speed of temperature infiltration into the block would probably not be enough to cause any engine damage but it could sure crack a cooling channel in the radiator which is designed to absorb cool as fast as possible or cause a coolant pipe to split.

I actually did nap right after changing the antifreeze. It was a great nap.
