Get the dirt bike. It will make you a better rider when you finally can get a street bike.

Get the dirt bike. You'll be riding a motorcycle minus the hassles of traffic and crazy cagers. I think most of us enjoy riding, but not necessarily being on the road. Look at how many on this forum would rather be on the track than on the streets.

You'll have more fun on a dirt bike and learn a lot about riding. You will be happy as hell and will be thanking your parents for going along with letting you get the dirt bike. It's the ideal situation for you.

You shouldn't ever ask that question. Do what you want to do. It doesn't matter what other people think. If you let every person who doesn't get along with you define who you are and what you do, then your life will be really sh*t. The only person here who can force you to leave is Alex, and I haven't seen you even coming close to braking the TOS, so I doubt that would happen.

I hope you get a dirt bike and stick around. I want to try dirt riding at some point. We can exchange tips!
Thanks akima I will stay

Yes, we'll exchange

If they are gung-ho for you riding dirt. Then go 100% all in. I truly believe you will not come to regret the decision and in hindsight even thank your parents for their decision. The dirt is crazy fun and you can also graduate to riding on cart tracks to practice the very same techniques that will be needed on the street and in spirited riding. Just as many street riders I know that wish they had there 250 back, the same amount wish they had a tard to ride like a tool in the dirt and then put street wheels on it to take to the hard core twisties.

As a parent of 2 licensed drivers, I would strongly discourage my kids to get a bike as their first experience to the open road with other drivers. While I may have complete confidence in my kids and their ability to ride, I however do not have that same trust for others that share the road. Until the "experience" of reading, predicting & reacting is built, I would rather them cage it up for at least a short time.

Show your maturity and turn that pissed feeling into determination or anything else positive. Chin up! You got dis yo!
Thanks!

Also, forgot to mention. I told my parents I wanted a bike, and was getting one, months before I even joined here. Which is over a year and a half ago.
A year and a half ago, as in when you were 14?? So they obviously thought you were a typical kid dreaming and that it would pass. So telling them when you are 14 and a long way from even having a drivers licence is different than being 16 and ready to hit the road. That is why a few of us said what we did about not really telling your parents of what your wishes were.

So you don't agree when I tell you that you are best off learing to drive first in a car but the others tell you the same thing and it's all good? LOL
So do you live somewhere that if you get a dirtbike you will be able to ride right from home or will it have to be taken somewhere for you to ride?
Either way don't give up your dream and keep saving for the dirtbike buddy.

You were buying gear? Were you hiding it or something? How did the poop hit the fan? Did you just mention that you wanted to look at that bike you had posted about and then your Mom had a freak out?

Then you've got it made with a dirt bike. No traffic, no cagers, no stoplights, no lanes, no cops, no speed limits,etc...... With a dirt bike, you ride to have fun; what more can you ask for? Why are you even hesitating to get the dirt bike?

Sorry I just don't get how you have been so keen for so long and the just out of nowhere your Mom has a problem and dropped the hammer on you not getting one.

Because my parents are crazy. I blame how they were raised. They're really weird, awkward, and just plain mean sometimes.

Although I don't doubt your maturity... I don't understand why others don't see why your parents don't want you to get a bike. You're 16!!!!! WTF I thought you were older. You're a baby (i know you didn't want to hear that) but you're young, too young to be on the road on two wheels. I am not a parent but I see their point, you need experience on the road first, see how drivers react, study how stupid and how sudden things can change on the road. It will help a lot when you switch from a car to a motorcycle, it WILL save your life.

If you want to ride, get a dirtbike it will help you and it looks like its a blast! Two more years and you'll get your street bike, it goes by quick. Although it sucks that you bought gear and NOW they say no, your parents love you, they're just looking out for you.

You guys act like I haven't spent time on the rode. You don't need to drive to see the stupidity of other drivers I've been involved in several accidents (everyone one was caused by my father ironically). I know the risks, and how stupid people can be. At least I still get to ride dirt Look at the bright side, right?

Is dirt riding really that fun? I'm not sure if it is...

I've always wanted a dirt bike. I think they look like a ton of fun! But I went a different route and bought a ATV. Great fun!

Just seems more interesting. I don't know much about dirt

I've had my permit since I was 16, so not long. But long enough to see dumb drivers

You've had your permit to drive for less than a year. You've seen stupid drivers but you don't understand everything that there is about driving, therefore you're not ready to ride. The fact that you think you know and think you've seen all the stupidity that happens on the road only proves you're not ready to be on two wheels out on the road. Stop dreading about not getting a ninja and concentrate on getting a dirtbike, if you don't want a dirtbike then don't get one. Simple as that

I'm not dreading not get a ninja...I couldn't be more happy that I'm getting a KLX. I guess I came across wrong...how do I not understand? You don't even have to drive a car to realize how stupid people are. This morning we were almost in a head on collision, for the second time. This time, were were lucky enough to keep the car as it was. Last time, it was totaled.

Realizing how stupid people can be and having to react and deal with it are completely different things. You're kidding yourself if you think observing something happen is the same as actually having to deal with it.

Come on Nick, how can you say you know what it is like to be out there, being a passenger and actually driving for longer than lets see 3 months, you have no clue what it is actually like to have to react when something happens, and apparently you Dad isn't that good at reacting to the situation. Trust what all of us that have driven for years is telling you. You are a very young 16 year old full of energy and ambition, but that doesn't equate to know what it is like to be out on the road.

We were all under the assumption that it was all good with his parents on him getting the bike, that is where the we were a bit shocked when he made this thread. I feel bad for the kid, but read my very first response to him and I said what many others have said, get some, well lots of experience driving and actually being in control when something bad happens.

Nick I hate to say it but I honestly don't think you're taking some of these harsh comments we say to heart. It's not to degrade you or poop on your self-esteem, it's to try and prove a point and nothing less.

Everyone's parents are different. I mean hell, after simply mentioning the fact that I wanted to get a motorcycle, and was taking a look at craigslist, my mom suggested that we go to a dealer instead and within a month I had my 250.

Just take it easy and soak in everything that the folks above have said.

Man that sucks, Nick!!! But like others have said, you're only 16 and getting good experience in a car really does help transitioning to riding a motorcycle on the street. I can't imagine starting riding a streetbike at 16. I think I would have killed myself or have been killed.

I would be stoked that your parents are letting you get a dirtbike! I really want a dirtbike or dual sport someday.

Get that KLX and enjoy the hell out of it!

I really wanted a bike when I was 17 and my parent's freaked. I instead turned my focus onto studying and getting into college. I spent a lot of time driving and riding my bicycle. Helped A LOT come time to actually ride. Getting road experience is a really good thing. Maybe get a manual to drive and you'll have an even easier time transitioning over to street riding. And maybe you won't even want to ride come a few years cause you'll be busy and more focused on school/work. Just work your way into it gradually, and focus on other things, because there are other things in life that are important (BLASPHEMY I know, but it is true).

Now that I've worked and am in college/live on my own, my parents really don't mind that I have a bike. They actually think it's a good thing that I worked my way gradually to learning, and then purchasing a bike, and that I try to be responsible about it/other things in my life.

There are probably going to be a lot of big changes in your life in the next couple of years, you may take a new perspective on things as you start to become more independent.

It's not that great trust me. Too much people time. Not enough alone time. No home-cooked food. More freedom to do what you want, but less freedom to go places if you don't have a car. It sounds like the greatest thing ever on paper, but it gets kinda tough some times.

Yes. This I sorta agree with. I got my experience on the roads before I had my license, on a road bicycle. Not to mention, the experience on the motorcycle made me a better driver. It's a circle of experience, not really one leading to the other, although I will agree that a motorcycle is not the best way of starting out, because there's more to riding than driving.

all that said, I am not advocating riding right away as a fresh 16 year old. I was not the greatest driver as a 16 year old, just as all 16 year old guys aren't the greatest drivers. But when I was ready, I got a bike. Now, I'm a more responsible person for it on the road.

However this:

no. not true. I've been on the road on 2 wheels since I was in middle school. (Mountain bike in middle school. Road bike at 14, and back to mountain biking, along with using the road bike for transportation at 16. Still riding both as often as possible. Ninja at 17, buddy's CBR600 all summer at 18. No crashes, accidents, or tickets. 8k+ miles on the ninja since I bought it in 1.5 seasons)

Nick is 16. Legally, he can be on the road in whatever vehicle he darn well wants, assuming he has a license for said vehicle. You need to start somewhere. Might as well start on a small bike, when you still live at home in a semi-protected environment (around town, parents to help with everything like maintenance/insurance/driving infraction/general vehicle ownership questions). Sure he's eager, sure he's 16 and is likely not as mature or experienced on the road as the rest of us with more than 3 months behind the wheel. Like I said, you gotta start somewhere.

@choneofakind I know it's going to be better, because my dad makes me feel like crap. I don't mind eating Ramen noodle soup, since that's what I eat a lot because I love it lmao

Dude I usually like what you post but really? Read his comments and you think he is best off starting somewhere as in on a bike? If he thinks that he knows what it is like from being in the passenger seat then I am sorry but that is just plain wrong and is just setting him up for an accident. Nick is a very very eager young man and he has A LOT to learn and needs to mature LOTS before he has then proper mentallity to ride on the road. That goes for 99% of 16 year olds, I was 16 once too and I also thought I knew everything about everything, but boy was I wrong.
Either way let just hope that he keeps saving and gets a dirtbike, racks up some experience and then goes from there. But in the meantime he needs to get driving his parents car, in busy places not just around the country roads, and then if his permit allows him get him out on the highway, when it's busy and let him see what it is REALLY like.
