An alternative would be to bundle your landline w/ cable tv and high speed internet. You might get a deal that makes keeping the landline around worth it.

My household uses ooma. It's basically a one time fee for lifetime free voip landline. It works well for the most part but like any voip system, it has its faults. If you have any questions about it, let me know.
Yeah I hear the Ooma is a good way to go. Are you happy with it? What is it faults? Will it work with 3MB DSL?

Ok I guess one question at a time.

1) yes I am happy with it... as a family anyways. I dont use it much at all since I have a cell phone but my parents use it all the time. My mom and dad uses it to call their parents and have yet to have an issue.

2) the faults are associated w/ your internet provider. My uncle got ooma but his cable connection was very unstable and so phone connections would drop whenever there was a disconnection with the internet. You'll have similar issues with all voip carriers if you have unstable internet. Call quality is good as long as bandwidth isnt being used by my brother downloading a bunch of stuff. The other benefit of a traditional landline, not voip, is if the power were to go down, you wont lose your phone line.

3) Noooo clue if it would work well on your dsl line. I doubt you'll have problems as long as it's decently fast and most importantly, stable. I have comcast cable and my download/upload varies anywhere from 100kb/s to 1.6mb/s so it is hard to judge how much bandwidth is necessary for good call quality.

If i were living alone and I had to have a landline, I would get ooma without any reserve. Its easy and cheap after the first payment. If I use google voice, I can have one number forward to both ooma and my cell which is fantastic so I dont miss any calls.
