What if you use earplugs, but also have speakers in your helmet so you can hear the music still, would that help, or be the same as not having ear plugs at al?

Wearing earplugs and then pumping enough sound energy in over the top of them to achieve normal music listening levels.... Sounds like you're defeating the whole purpose of the earplugs.

There's no magic solution that will let you "have your cake and eat it too." There's no alternate method of hearing things. Hearing anything means that sound waves are hitting the tiny hairs in your inner ear. Hearing music over all the noise involved in riding a motorcycle means you're hitting those tiny hairs pretty hard.

A couple recommendations similar to Daft Punk
The Chemical Brothers - Galvanize
The Crystal Method - Vegas CD
When I crossed the country I had those two exact two albums along with the Fight Club soundtrack from The Dust Brothers and The Crystal Method - Legion of Boom & Drive. I never get tired of them.

My guilty pleasure if the Top Gun soundtrack... because Tom Cruise rides a Ninja.

Alex isn't the only person I've heard say this. I just don't have the money to shell out for a helmet speaker system.

My dad and I run a chatterbox so we can talk to each other, and play music. They get LOUD. I usually use ear plugs then use the chatterbox as well. My music isnt deafening, I can still hear my exhaust, and him talking to me at a redlight without using the chatterbox. I figured that would be better than sticking earphones IN my ears.

This has been discussed extensively but I"m with CThunder-Blue on this one. I use Etymotics ER-6. I've also heard good things about Shure in-ear earphones too. Great isolation. Also good for the airplane.

I think an easy way to set a benchmark is to put your earbuds in while off the bike. Turn your music on and set it to a reasonable volume. Then you know while riding your aren't blowing your eardrums out. This of course applies if you have Db reduction earphones.

Yep. I always turn on my music before I even turn the bike on.

Don't flame me! Planetary (Go!) by My Chemical Romance

Haha I play an audio book for my favorite series ever for rush hour. It's familiar enough to amuse me but not too much that I get distracted.

The one time I listened to Pandora I started singing along at a stop light. People stare at you like you're crazy.

What's in your playlist?

I like to listen to pretty spirited music when I ride... Shinedown, Matchbox, Nickleback, etc.... this morning my mp3 player picked Yanni "Within Attraction" for me. Pachelbel's canon as done by the kid on youtube with the electric guitar is pretty good too.

Anyone else listen to music that others might consider odd for a bike?

my brother is some high-up at skullcandy so he gets me all the good ****. their normal earbud headphones work pretty well in-helmet but dont cancel enough noise for my taste so i just stuck it inside an earplug. perfect.

I use the standard issue ear plugs from work and a Sena headset in helmet. The silicone earplug stems sometimes touch the speaker in the helmet and conduct a butt load of bass into my head... awesome sound.

I've heard good things about Skullcandy, but since I'm a snob about "sound quality" I've never tried them. I might give them a shot though.

The difference seems to be the latter look cooler

I like Skullcandy. Fits my tiny little ears.

I listen to Bowie, Madonna, Duran Duran, NIN, Rammstein...poppy fast paced pieces that keep me up, awake, and paying attention to the ride

I use JVC sport earbuds which have a soft plastic piece which wraps around the ear. I find them comfortable and remain in place when putting on the helmet.

As for playlist it's normally my created Slayer or Trivium channel on Pandora.

Skull Candy are junk. I bought a set and the bass was way over produced. It was just too muddy and the sound quality sucked. I didn't even buy them for my ride. I bought them to have something to listen to at my desk, but they sucked so bad I returned them.

The past couple years their high end stuff got a way better. They used to be **** quality and only about style but they are better now. Also you get what you pay for. A few 10 pair of headphones is probably not gonna sound great

Honestly have never tried to listen to music while riding. If music in the car is any indication, whenever I need a lot of concentration (ie: not sure where I'm going), I always subconsciously turn the music way down or off. It distracts me.

Can't do homework with music on either.

I find that when I ride with music I'm more aware of what's going on around me. I don't turn it up too much though, just enough to slightly hear it.

These are really comfortable while riding and they don't try to rip your ears off when taking the helmet off/on: Bose IE2 Headphones. There is virtually no noise cancellation with these though, so that kinda sucks.

And this app is a godsend: Media Volume Control. It adjusts your volume based on how fast you're going, so you can have it set really low for when you come to a stop and can hear everything around you. This is for Android phones though, I don't know if apple has an equivalent.

I stream 90's music on my commute to and from work.

My Parrot SK4000 already does that (Bluetooth or line input).
