it's not legal here, but i wouldn't do it, even if it was. not because i couldn't, but just because i don't trust the drivers around here. some of the drivers around here would run into you just to do it. and then they would say, "oh, but officer, i didn't see him".

I never had much need to do any lane splitting around here(even it is illegal), but I did do some lane sharing, but that was when I was young and thought I was invincible. I wouldn't do it now that I am a mere mortal.

I found a reason to do it today. I decided to do some highway riding up to a nice little bike dealer about 30 miles away after the yamaha dealer I visited wanted $40 for led bolts . About 3 miles from my turn off there was stop and go traffic. I lane splitted the 3 miles to find that there was about a 5-6 car pile up including a tractor trailer...at my turn off. I ended up riding down a mile or so to turn around and make a right at my turn . It was hella fun, I felt like I was taking the msf course all over again; damn these things are nimble .

I personally would probably not lane split unless traffic is at a standstill (or near standstill). I think staying away from this kind of lane splitting would be wise:

we call it filtering in the UK and I'm sure as hell not hanging about in the pouring rain in a traffic jam if I have any choice! Loads of people have commuting bikes here just for that - so they don't have to sit in traffic. Although I did have a woman turn into me one time and catch my arm - she looked a bit psycho so I decided just to ride on! Only time I won't do it is between buses or trucks on windy days - that's bad news! I do it most days though - part of the fun of biking

I dont think what he is doing is "lane splitting" pretty sure you need to stay on your side of the road to be splitting lanes. That being said I think lane splitting is the best benefit of riding a bike. It saves me a ton of time. I do evaluate the risk of each use, there is clearly a higher risk but in stopped/slow moving traffic I find it very useful.

Did my first lane split, stopped traffic at red light (about 2-3 light cycles worth, in 90+degree heat/humidity).
I used the bicycle lane to make it to front of line right as light changed for me Seeing as 100ft up the road the 2 lanes merge into 1 and is always hell in traffic, it was a great benefit for me okay...okay... so may not be technically lane splitting but I'm new to this :P |

I think a big concern is the cagers not being used to it, around where I live it is so common that people make extra room for you and watch for it. It would not be a unusual occurrence in summer to pull up to a light and have 2-3 other riders filter up next to you at one light. Even big touring bikes and fatboys ect do it around here.
If your looking to practice or just getting started it helps to be in the middle lane so you can choose the left or right side of the car ahead of you and start with stopped car at traffic lights first. Also be aware that the thing you will bump into is your bar ends on peoples mirrors and sports cars tend to be wider than trucks. at least the trucks mirrors are up high out of the way. I personally think slow moving traffic (25ish) is more dangerous than anything else people are more likely to jump over in a hurry to get the "better" lane without looking. |

down here with the heavy traffic, especially rushhour traffic, people jumping into the next lane without signalling is a big issue. always watch where people are looking if you're lane splitting... if someone is staring in the mirror watching the cars next to them, chances are they're going to take the first gap that opens up. i make it a habbit when i split to never have a gap on one side with a car on the other... you're just inviting that car to run you over. also splitting on the right i've found to be quite dangerous at lights... people love to change their minds and make a right turn or get into the bike lane to make a right after sitting there for a bit. especially on the highway, but also generally, i usually only split between the #1 and 2 lanes, just my experience with socal drivers

My bike lane usage today is actually between the 2 main lanes and a separated right turn lane, because of the concrete wall. However, that still doesn't stop someone from darting over, as there is a gap that opens wider between the bike lane and the right turn, the closer you get to the actual street they turn right onto. I will take your advice and keep it off the right |

I think I've posted here already saying no but I've been adding miles to the bike and I haven't found myself lane splitting yet (Texas) but I do find my self changing lanes at high speeds when there is less than ample space.
Another maybe dangerous or not so dangerous(?) thing I do every now and then is weave the cones that close a lane when there's not much traffic on my local highway or just ride the closed lane because there's no construction till later. But the lane is still closed >.> but the big bucket ones, nicely spaced. Not legit lane splitting yet though. |

phr3ek - if that's you, you are taking some pretty crazy chances. What stands out isn't the speed while passing cars that are close together, what scares me is the speed and where you position your bike when passing cars that have no car directly to the side of them, i.e. the traffic gaps. There were quite a few of these in the first minute of the vid before you hopped into the carpool lane. All it takes is one of those vehicles to start to dart over into that open space without seeing you (and they wouldn't see you at those closing speeds), and your commute becomes an all day affair with the accompaniment of some EMT's.

yes that is me on my 636
lol, i know it seems fast in the vid but i wasnt going fast at all, 40 mph max also the gaps are a pretty decent size i appreciate the concerns though like i mentioned, that is my daily commute, twice a day every day for the next year i have been cut off b4 and had a couple pretty close calls i ALWAYS cover my clutch and both brakes alex, i have experience what you mentioned, but i am always on the look out for such an event there are only a couple of cagers in those areas video-ed that dont pay attention, but i am on full alert for them |

I have a similar, short and a lot less trucks, drive each day lately, if I was you I would try a few more passes on the left shoulder, less risk. especially with the larger gaps in traffic. I think the only real issue with lane splitting is the people that dive right. usually people check their left a bit more. If possible I try to pass between the car and left shoulder. Might just be personal preference but I like knowing I have the shoulder if someone tries to merge into me.

kev, this vid is proof that you've def. got balls of steel. i love when i see CHP bikes lane splitting or driving crazy, a few of the CHPs down here in SD are crazy with the splitting and make you look tame ... p.s. didn't that chp jump over a double yellow??? he needs a ticket!

I don't believe that full alert is enough, if it isn't causing you to change speed or move position. You're staying at the exact same speed, and staying right next to the cars/trucks even when there is a large gap to the side of them. One of these times, they will start to come over at exactly the wrong time, it's a virtual certainty. With a foot of lateral space and a closing speed of 40+ mph, it's too late to make any decisions that haven't already been made. There's a guy on BARF called DataDan who captures and publishes all of the injury/fatality data for california motorcycle accidents, with special focus on those here in the bay area. The vast majority of lanesplitting accidents are due to people not understanding what it means to mind that gap. Good luck.

Heck all them video's, esp the moscow moron, look way to risky for me...
Really the only time I really even want to split between the cars is at a stop light! Just so I don't have to deal w/ their moronic actions and gain a safe distance. I haven't tried it yet, just cause I don't want to piss the 1 a-hole who hits me from behind or tries to road rage. (I'd really hate to have to dent my helmet by headbuttin some fool ) |

Kev, you're definitely going much faster than I would. I thought legal LS was limited to just ~5mph faster than the traffic?

Yup yup, anyway...I wasn't trying to sound like those critics saying how dangerous it is and blah blah blah. We're all riders here...and I know that So-Cal traffic is horrible and seeing how that is your daily commute I can understand gettin through all that bs traffic.

What?!!
Actually, the "limit" isn't a limt, it's a guideline. Of course, the higher your speed, the less reaction time you have. Please remember that the moscow video is 100% NOT lane splitting. It's reckless operation, plain and simple. |
