So, as I mentioned a while back, here in NZ our rules have opened up from this month to any readily available (ie imported by the official importer) DOT spec tyre of the correct size....so no mail order specials if the tyre is not available here already.
Supply of SC Pirelli's can be a bit patchy - I have a front SC1, but rears are only SC2 for 140/70 and not in stock currently and I don't want to go to 150/60. I have a new Rosso 11 which was the go to rear tyre for many guys and worked well. I did a few miles on one when I bought my 300, but shifted to the Dunlops for most of the season before trying the RS10's also ( ended up with a pair!). So, on a back to back basis, how have people found an SC2 Super Corsa rear vs Dr11 rear for grip and feel. Much in it? Just interested to know what people thought . I'll be doing a test day in about 3 weeks with SC1 SC front and a DR11 rear as that's what I'll have to start the season on and probably run for most of it. We've no Alpha13SP's yet here, and the local Dunlop IMporter is showing one size of Alpha 14 in stock already.....so not sure if we will get the 13SP's locally supplied.

I tried new combination these past couple weeks. Two weeks ago at Laguna Seca and last week @ Sears Point/Sonoma.
front: 110/70-17 Dunlop Alpha-13 SP @ 27psiI must say that Alpha-13 SP has much softer casing than any tyre before. I was practically able to mount it by hand without any tyre-levers! Well, used levers for last 6" of bead and that was it. Using sticker front-tyre really helped balance bike's handling given vastly different tyre sizes (stock front with +2 size increase in rear). Front-end still pushed at limit, but did so at higher grip-level and slid more gently and controllable than before with regular A-13. Still can't get 150 back-end to let go no matter what kind of maneuvers I did. Maybe if I did abnormal stuff like slam on back brakes I can get it to come around. Full-throttle in corners just increased speed and tucked front-end. So there's still mis-match with using 110/150 tyres on N250R, even with stickier front tyre. Once I go through these Alpha-13s, I may try Bridgestone V02 GP125 90/120 soft/medium combo that fast riders are using. Lower rotational-weight for faster acceleration and even better grip! |

I think they're cheap because the RC cup moved to the q3+.

Well, I'll be likely be going a different route next year. I just scored 5 sets of new Moto3/ 125GP-sized Dunlops for free, so it's worth it for me to try them out. The only catch is that they are 5 years old. Shouldn't be a big deal because they were stored properly. The 250 has handled pretty well all year, but I'm dragging the belly pan in some corners so I'll need to get the ride height back to where it is now. I'll measure the change in tire diameter then make new dog bones for the rear and lower the forks in the triples to get the ride height back to where it needs to be.
The one set of A-13 SP MotoAmerica takeoffs I put on the bike this year lasted the entire season. That would be six three hour endurance races plus practice (minus about three or four hours when we used rain tires.) I'd say a total of about 21 hours of on-track use so that's pretty good. The last race I was getting more sliding from the front than I like, so it was time for a new set. The back was worn down to the wear bars, but never really lost grip all season except for going over damp patches and the occasional movement/protesting under heavy braking and downshifting. We won five out of six endurance races with the narrowest margin of victory being four laps, so I'd say our overall pace was pretty good. However, we did not need to push to a sprint race level of pace, so that is a factor to consider. If the new Q3 tires really are an improvement over the A-13s then they should be a solid choice for our little bikes. Still, my favorite tire so far has been the Pirelli Supercorsa. Without knowing how the Dunlop slicks will perform, the Pirellis are still my first choice for outright performance. |

Okay, thinking about went weather grip. If you can't use proper wets and have to have use a DOT tyre, what gives the best grip....must be stock sizes too!

Hard to beat Michelin Pilot Roads for wet grip. Haven't tried them on the Ninja, but I can get a knee down on my Bonnie with PR4s in the dry. I did my first wet track day on them, I'd say it's not as good as real rains, but definitely better than a DOT race tire. If you're in mixed/drying conditions, it might be truly viable vs the other options.

Looking forward to trying out new Q3+ tyres. Supposedly they are about 3-sec/lap faster than previous Alpha 13-SP used in MotoAmerica. The following times are rough averages I've gotten at Thunderhill. Gonna move up 250 Superbike rankings!!!
BT-45 ~ 2:22 Alpha-13 ~ 2:16 SCv2 ~ 2:15 Alpha-13-SP ~ 2:15 Q3+ ~ 2:12 estimated Got a set of vRossi wheels in 17x3.0/4.0 to make best use out of the 150 rear size. Gonna try them all out this Friday test-n-tune @ Buttonwillow and use fastest set for races. |

Just a heads-up, I was talking to the local Bridgestone guy and supposedly they are coming out with a R11 (race compound with a just enough sipes to make it DOT) that'll be available in a 110 front and 140 or 150 rear. He's saying they might not be available until May-ish, though. I was talking to him thinking I'd go to slicks this year, but he seems to think these'll be a better option.
...because we didn't have enough to think about...

I've got two spare sets of stock '08-12 N250R wheels.
Third set vRossi wheels for N250R was found on Craiglist through an automated search that sent me emails. After a year, it found a set! As mentioned in various threads here, the bearings were seized and toast. Replaced them with ceramic ones. |

I had a pair of R11's in 110/140 sizes land in the driveway this afternoon from the New Zealand distributor. They have only been in country a week....
Any one yet been able to try and set? Feel is wildly soft rubber..... Reports from journo's is good, but keen for some racers to provide feedback. Unfortunately I've just sold my old 300 Ninja race bike and my new race bike hasn't arrived yet....so I cant try them. aaraarrgggh!

So, this last weekend I got the R11s on. I'm thoroughly impressed. Granted, I've been riding on Alpha 13s for about a year and a half. We were running with the chicane at PIR this weekend, so I can't really compare laptimes, but my confidence was *way* up. I typically have barely been touching my right knee down, and this weekend that changed. At this rate, I'll be needing a new set of sliders before the end of the year. I was able to harass and even get in a couple passes on 2 people I normally would lose if I made more than one mistake. I ran the 140 rear and had zero chicken strips there. About 3/8" chicken strips on the front. I was running ~26psi front and 28 rear. The fast guys on the same tire (although one opted for a 150) were running in the 32/30 range, but when I tried that in practice I couldn't keep heat in the rear.

So, weird crash Saturday on the R11s. Lowside late in Turn 1 at PIR trying to go outside a slower rider. 75ish mph, nearly full lean. Running ~1:31s. About 90deg. Pressures 30f, 33r per the Bridgestone guy. No real indication I could feel that something was amiss until I was sliding. A buddy behind me says my rear went out, but the tire was still melty on the edge, not scrubbed clean. A bit weird. Best guess is I got wide enough to be on dirty track, and my footpeg lifted the tire before it could show the expected wear.
I walked off. Leathers and bike will need some work, but next round is still pretty doable.

Yup. Pressures off the warmers. Crash was 2-3laps in, but I was on a pretty good pace for me.

I used the R11 for the second half of the season. Seemed to work pretty good for me but I am still a couple seconds off the top riders, they are all on pirelli. I doubt the tires are the reason I am slower, it hurts when you run out of talent
