On our new Honda, it has a system that works pretty well. It's just a camera sitting in the right rear-view mirror, that turns on when you engage the right turn signal, showing a large picture of it on the dash screen. It pretty much eliminates the blind spot, and provides a wide-angle view of everything that is to the right of the car, along with some guide markers that allow you to judge distance of any vehicles that are behind and to the right. No radar or beeping involved for that tech, and it generally works as expected.



Lane departure warning works pretty well too. Non-intrusive, doesn't steer for you, but can provide an alert if you are crossing lanes without signaling.

This is our first car with adaptive cruise, and it also works quite well. You just set your speed to whatever you want to travel at, and when it comes up to a slower car (identified with radar), it just matches that car's speed until it moves out of the way. If someone cuts in between, it drops back quickly. The safety margin is wider than I'd probably keep when controlling speed directly, but that's not the worst thing in the world. It makes it incredibly low stress to zip along in medium traffic.

Zombie bump (hope this isn't a repeat, I scanned through this thread)

Reading up more on the NC700X and came upon this article - only related as this was the bike they installed the system on.

I'd rather have an ejection seat because a distracted driver is still gonna run that intersection. What I'd like to see more is cars with automatic breaking systems or make it mandatory for crappy drivers.

I have just reread this entire discussion and there are a few points I would like to highlight.
#1 The original (so many merged threads) question: "Does car technology help Bikers?" Yes. There are many new safety features that seem to recognize bikes and pedrestrians also, and assist the driver in seeing and avoiding them.
#2 Is the new technology reliable. Yes*. The technology is reliable enough for many major manufacturers to put thier reputation, not to mention their wallets on the line. There will always be room for improvements and upgrades to these systems and everything fails/brakes eventually. *I have been unable to find any significant information on failure but I am sure it happens*
#3 Atonomous vehicles are operating on our streets in our factories and in our skies. They will be a part of the future we will just have to wait and see to what degree and what laws come from/for them
#4 Motorcycles will change in the next 10 years. Bikes will be quite different in the 2020s. More electronics, dual clutch transmissions and even electric motors. Will we like all of the changes? Some thought more than 3 gears on a bike was crazy, others said "who needs electric start on a Motorcycle?" Today there are very few bikes without electric start and 6 speeds.
#5 we can never under estimate how poorly skilled other drivers are. Some driver have no other reaction than to hit the brake. That is the extent of their skill. If I cannot use the gas I use the brake. They have extremely poor reaction times (even when they are not distracted) and they take lots more time to process what they see (watch when people hit their brakes approaching a cop stopped on the side of the highway) and react to it properly. We as Motorcyclist have to have better reactions and be more aware of what is happening arround us to stay alive and this stays with you when you jump into your cage and drive. Most people drive around like they are half asleep and it is only your vigalance that can keep you from being involved in an accident. No driver assist can make up for your lack of attention just like no helmet/leather suit can, they can just try to keep the damage to a minimum. Keep your head on a swivel, check over your shoulder, slow before the intersection and dont go into blind turns faster than you can react. These are the only safety systems that can really help motorcyclists!
