My Little Assistant
I recently took 8 days of vacation time from work and did some of the more serious mods on my bike. This was my "Little Assistant"! Always wanting to get her hands on a wrench or screwdriver and "help Papa on the 'cycle" to put it in her words. If you look close, she has grease on her face! Her name is Lydia...
...and yeah, thats my dining room!

Thanks Gabe! It was wicked awesome from the saddle too!
Allyson, but I'm looking at your avatar! I need a lot more practice to go over that far! I must find tight corners! (too many sweeping curves around here.)

Thanks Teri. I've posted my riding progress progressively in my photo albums here at Ninjette. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/album.php?u=1178 It has been the most awesome learning experience I have EVER had! I started riding in 2-up in November, 2008 with my hubby, riding my own in May, 2009, riding the mountains of TN/NC October, 2009, and have just acquired an addiction to track riding. lol! It has been an incredible adventure. Enjoy your journey, your setbacks, and your progresses. All of it is part of what makes motorcycling an adventure for the spirit!

I do some leaning over on curves but I'm still new at it, I don't go TOO fast on curves because I'm still building up my confidence. I don't know how much truth there is to leaning but for some reason I'm terrified I'll lean and the back tire will slide. Not that this happened to me yet but it's just a thought, so I take it easy on curves (and bore the heck out of my husband who has to wait up for me. LOL)

Epic pics, Ally!
I take it easy on curves too, though I'm more terrified of overshooting the corner and testing the structural integrity of guard rail manufacturing. Haven't quite gotten my head to cooperate in LOOK THAT WAY vs just out of the corner of my eye. Need more practice.... Aww shucky darn! LOL

We all feel that way about leaning when we start riding. Have you taken the MSF class? I remember one thing my instructor saying that got me through my first few mountain corners. He said, "If you find yourself in a corner too hot, the ONLY thing you can do is lean the bike further. These suckers can lean MUCH farther than you'd be comfortable leaning." Also, read Twist of the Wrist II by Keith Code (or watch the DVD) and Total Control by Lee Parks. They have great cornering advice. On the street, there are hazards to consider, so it's very rare for me to lean to the point of dragging knee on the street. Honestly, that has only happened for me at the track. Always leave some in reserve on the street. Slow in, fast out. As for hubby, he'd rather be waiting for his awesome wife to catch up then for you to be pushing yourself and crash. I've had to learn this the hard way when riding with my hubby on long mountain trips. Quote:

^ Essential knowledge from Ally. @NevadaWolf: Remember that stuff. I've had an accident because I hadn't practised and embedded that knowledge in my mind. Not long after my accident I found myself in a near identical scenario (went into a tight corner uncomfortably quick), but because I had practised looking where I want to go on almost every ride, I made it through just fine... perhaps with a bit more adrenaline floating through my veins than before that particular turn
The things to hammer into your head for dealing with tight corners; * do not touch the front brake while you're leaning * be relaxed on the bars * look where you want to go (do not look at something you don't want to hit... eg a ditch ) * turn the bike using counter steering, not using body weight * let your body lean with the bike like this: NOT like this: You can practice all those things I just mentioned without having to ride fast or lean really far. Even very gentle turns at slow speed, you can counter steer the bike, think about your body's position, look where you want to go, etc. Doing this will train your mind to do it automatically at a time where it's really essential to control the bike that way. If you've ever done martial arts, you've probably seen how they teach you through repetition. You can't be expected to consciously remember lots of little things in an event that will be over 1 second after it starts... you have to have trained yourself in advanced through repetition. That's my nooblet thoughts. |

Oh, I got the not looking at the outside bit. My trouble comes from looking too far into the corner and cutting into the oncoming lane or the guardrail on the inside of the curve. Then freaking out about a head on, try to open my turn up and return to my lane while having a not so perfect exit. I can usually find the sweet "Look here" spot if I have a vehicle I can focus on ahead of me. But solo I struggle to find it. Which is probably why I got into the habit of looking with my eyes instead of moving my head since its easier for me to just shift my gaze.
