As far as the crack might I suggest J-B Weld? I would tape off a very very small area around the crack because if you get that weld all over it looks like ****. But it'll hold under any conditions and hold strong. I sound like a walking advertisement for the weld but I've just been so impressed.

My uncle just seen this pic and said my dad owned this very bike. Or at least something very similar to it. What is it? Thanks for posting I don't even remember him owning or racing it. Look at that helmet.

That's the one. Thanks Taz! And wow Freddie Spencer. Met him at the AMA museum. I was 12ish. He autographed a pair of gloves for me. He's got some stuff on Youtube that I watch. Freddie is a bad ass. Thanks for posting this let me go down memory lane for a minute

Being of the BMW mark I'm sure it a wonderful piece of machinery. It is, however, the ugliest motorcycle I have ever laid eyes on. A change in color scheme would be a good start.

No way, that G310 looks awesome.
I'm a fan of the G310GS too, but for some reason it's seriously delayed. They were showing it last year already here it is end of this year and it's still not for sale. It's probably taking them this long to figure out how high of a price they can get away with. Edit: BTW, I still love a F800GS. I just never got one because most are $10K used and just not a good value. And they are a little on the fat side too, which is why the G310GS excites me.

In the same vein, how about this 300 class bike with the same BMW 310cc single. Made by the Indian company that has partnered with BMW.

I had some more time on a KTM RC 390 this weekend, and I agree.
If you are hittin' it hard in the corners it's all good, but otherwise the single-cylinder engine just doesn't cut it for me. My buddy likes it, but I'd never be happy on one unless it was on a (small) track. |

To lump all singles into a no go list is short sighted IMO, I give you the RC250GP as one example
Point of interest; notice how massive the fork tubes are in comparison to the lower and brakes |

On a track I wouldn't care, and there's something to be said for cornering clearance but in traffic it's all herky jerky at low speeds. Small thing I guess but after eight years with a single I'm enjoying the smoothness of a Ninja twin. Bill

On the subject of thumpers, I've kinda always wanted a Yamaha SRX 600. In the USA, only available 1 year, 1986. It was a marketing failure because the hot new inline 600's like the Ninja and Hurricane were just coming to market. This one flew under the radar in the USA with bigger and faster bikes making the headlines. But even back then I thought the 600's were fat pigs and I yearned for fun lightweight bikes.

Fun bike, slow, but I never rode it on the street. Actually saw a SRX250 the other day. First one I'd seen. That was even more unusual than the 600. Your KTM would definitely be a fun single. I have nothing against small singles (I have XRs and CRFs) but the 390 doesn't doesn't do it for me. I've always thought a DR650 Supermoto looked like fun. |

They say the Duke 390 is way more enjoyable on the road. Better seat, more comfortable position and tuned a bit more for torque than the top end. I never rode one but would like to try.

I rode a friend's 390 Duke on the Dragon, and it had plenty of power, handled great, and was a blast. I've heard mixed reviews about its general reliability though, and I didn't care for the way the seat locked me in. It took some effort just to be able get my butt to slide over to get a knee down. When I got used to that after a mile or two, I had no complaint. It has way more torque than you'd expect an engine that size to have.

He has the single seat race tail, so there's just a 1/2" foam pad. Surprisingly, it's not that uncomfortable if you are riding for less than an hour or are doing a lot of cornering. He has also geared his down a few teeth, but it still doesn't feel faster or more powerful than a 250 Ninja, though it is. |

I heard of the RC390's blowing their head gasket at the race track due to poor machining of the head surface. Haven't heard of too many other issues. Wait, I recall discussion of overheating.
There's the handling difficulties. The rears tend to be hard to keep the rubber on the road at serious lean angles. Probably because of the straight linked rear shock. The R3 has the same issue. The Ninja 250 and 300 has a proper 3 point pivot plate.

His 390 was in the shop, trying to find an issue where it would stall and not restart until it cooled. It wasn't overheating, and the fan was working properly. Swapped a bunch of stuff including the TB and the ECU, which seemed to fix the problem.
The Tech was taking it for a test ride when it tossed the cam chain. They dropped in a new engine. KTM USA was pretty good about it. I think it was within days of the original factory warranty running out. |
