Holy crap, I was exhausted after only reading all you had to endure Alex! I bet you were extremely glad when you arrived home. I think the competition should be renamed Iron Balls because you have to have some seriously mental focus and endurance to accomplish such a task. I only wish I could! Props!

Anyone else tempted to take all the bonus sites and go puttering along "collecting" them? I keep looking at that string of Pony Express bonuses.

I think the reports said that two or three riders managed the entire pony express route and managed to swing up and hit pikes peak.

Yep! Much to the flat out amazement of the route masters. While at a slightly less enthusiastic pace, I think such an adventure would be an awesome journey.

Wow!!! Great write-up Alex!! I know I'm not capable of that. Hell, I'm barely capable of a 400 mile ride on the ninjette right now. This is awesome!!! Now I really wish I could have met up with you when you were in Cleveland the first time
Oh well, this sounds like an experience you'll never forget and you'll be able to tell all your friends about that will make you sound like a crazy motorcyclist. How many hours did you sleep when you got home? |

Alex, what a great adventure and write up - I really felt your pain / triumph as the days went on. The description of you sleeping on the lawn of the hotel epitomises what you went through and is just so funny
I'm definately putting this on my "things to do when I retire" bucket list. Right now, I don't think my wife/kids would be as understanding as yours.

Interesting that he carried so little, thought more would be good to have on hand. Also wow on the reaction of the pregen going up the mountain, is there really that big of a difference between the two generations or I wonder if that's just his bike?

A number of bikes had trouble at the peak, it is 14,000 feet in the air. A friend's FJR would barely run, and wouldn't restart at the top. The air does get really thin up there, and is noticeably different every 1000 feet up you go after 10k.

I just read he had his tuned/shimmed/set/whatever for San Diego, so going up that high and having problems makes sense.
I've never touched my bike and didn't have a single problem going up to Evans or down to Badwater, which is what surprised me that he would have difficulty. I am either completely insensitive to my bike's performance or have lucked out in getting the bike already set to the sweet spot of average for everywhere.

One of the riders in this year's event recently switched bikes to a Wing. He thinks he has the new one set up reasonably completely at this point:

Why two radar detectors? Backup/redundancy or another reason? Got the rest figured out except the black puck under the right GPS and the box with the switch on the top.
Weather would be a nice bit of info to have...

I'm not sure whether it is two detectors, or one detector with an add-on module. It also looks like he's using a phone in the middle to run Escort's companion app, to show when the detector is going off there as well. The black puck I believe is an XM antenna for one of the GPS units. The box with the switch on the top is just a switchbox to power other accessories on and off, likely wired to his aux lights.
edit: wait, I just saw that there is another detector sitting smack on top of the Escort, not sure how I missed that. No idea why he is running that as well.

I noticed a lot of Escort labels so looked at the site. Both detectors look like they are different models of Escort Passports. Not sure which one the SmartCord is hooked up to, but thats what is running the app (Escort Live sounds handy, it shows where everyone else hooked into the network is receiving radar signals as well - least from what I can see.)
Oh, forgot GPS units could have XM. Ah! Smart idea to be able to turn accessories on/off. I'm thinking of adding a gizmo kill switch so I can free up power for heat.

Rex walked me through the components on his Wing. I will see if I can remember what most of it does. Alex, you are right, the hockey puck is a GXM-40 antenna for XM, weather and traffic. There are two radar detectors because Rex listens to one while the other is tied into Escort's smartphone app for early warnings about where LEOs might be. He actually is running two smartphones, one for the Escort App and the other is his digital speedometer. The unit sitting up top with the four clear lenses is an LED that strobes when the radar detector starts beeping. I don't know if his is home-made or from a commercial vendor but to get a better idea go to MarcParnes.com and look for Visual Alert. I have one of Marc's on my Escort and it does a great job. The various other waterproof switches on the brake and cluth resevoir are for his aux lighting, his aux fuel cell and some other things. One of them is wired to the speed sensor wire going to the internal Honda GPS so that the speed can be turned off and thus the GPS will respond to touching while moving (safety feature override). A lot of people with the Honda Nav system on a GW do this.

It's obviously hard to do back-to-back a/b testing for detector effectiveness without access to a few different radar guns. But I had always heard that having detectors that close to eachother can affect the performance of both of them. Don't know if that translates into a range reduction of 1%, 20%, or 50%. But also not sure that it matters that much for most real-world radar traps. Typically, if an LEO is running radar, if they are leaving it on, any detector picks it up with plenty of time for the rider to roll off if needed. If they aren't leaving it on and are only using instant-on/pop radar in spurts, it's only a matter of luck if they happen to target a vehicle close enough in front of you. otherwise the first instant-on hit that the detector receives might be the one aimed right at the bike anyway, with no time to react.
I have to say that for me, radar wasn't a huge factor for me in this year's rally. I had a few hits here and there, but can only think of 1 or 2 times over that xx,xxx mile stretch where an alert actually caused me some worry such that I had to react. Radar or not, if you're risking big speed in areas where there is reasonable likeliness of police activity, the odds catch up with everybody eventually.

Looking at his dash again, I think he may have set a world record for number of functioning GPS chips on a 2-wheeled vehicle. Each of those detectors has one, both smartphones have one, the two add-on GPS's plus the built-in GPS all have one, the SPOT device on the right has one, plus he almost certainly has his primary cell phone stashed somewhere if it's not one of the two being used as aux displays. For a total of 9 by my count.
I thought I was sitting pretty with 4 (a pair of GPS's, a SPOT, and a cell phone).

I rode out to PA from home base here in CA, 2300 miles or so back in 2013. I had considered trailering it or even shipping the bike ahead of time, but eventually ran out of time for logistics. It was also a good shakedown run across the country for some new equipment that I really hadn't had a chance to test. It turned out to be useful, as I found I needed to fix a few issues with the fuel cell that would have been problematic if I was on the clock at the time. I did have a new set of tires put on right at the start (after traveling cross-country), but that still only barely got me to checkpoint 2, so it seems tire wear will always be part of the game for me.

One set of tires only lasted two legs?? Was it the roads, the weight of a rally prepped bike, or just the nature of the tires you used? That doesn't sound like a whole lot of miles covered before needing replacemnts.

The first two legs were 7k miles for me. I never got more than 4k - 5k at most on a rear, so lasting to 7K was a good stretch.

Ok, figured it was up in the 6-7k range. Since that was what i got out of my Pirellis, surprised you were getting about the same.
Going back in my bubble now.
