I go off of the wholesale price of unleaded. Thats the price the gas station owner pays to get the fuel delivered to his station. (I deliver fuel by semi on occasion) As a general rule, the wholesale price + $.67 is the price the station owners will charge of they are making a few pennys a gallon.
$.60 of the $.65 is taxes (state local fed)

All local fuel terminals set there own price for fuel delivered to the station. This price fluctuates from the wholesale price but Ive never seen it more than $.05 higher or lower.
Nearly every gas station gets fuel delivered daily. (even the small ones)
All of the stations I deliver to charge the current wholesale price +
$.62 as the rock bottom price.
If you watch the wholesale price, you can predict with fairly good accuracy a price rise in your cost at the pump.
Heres the formula for downstate Illinois.
wholesale + $.62 = the lowest price at the pump.
If this price is higher than the price at the pump get ready for a jump in price at the pump within 24 hours. This jump will be set by the station owner and be at LEAST double the difference to cover the possible price jump in wholesale the next day. When the wholesale price stabilizes the price at the pump will slowly trickle down close to the $.65 above wholesale.

This allows the station owner to say "I only make a few pennys a gallon". This isnt a lie, Its not the whole truth either. They should say "I only make a few pennys a gallon profit on 50-100 days a year. The rest of the time, I make between a nickle and a quarter"

BTW wholesale is at $3.04 as I type this.

Gas is Free!!!!

Find a big SUV (least a 20 gallon tank)
Drill Hole in underside of Gas tank.
Fill up your Bucket, sitting under gas tank.

Enjoy $5.00 / gallon Prices!

Sorry to disappoint, but they won't be used up...ever. Oil will continue to steadily climb in price, and the increase in price will make it profitable for us to drill for the harder to get stuff. Let's say we eventually tap into all possible reserves on earth. We still won't run out because the price of oil will get so high that either A) a cheaper substitute will be found, or B) We will increase our efficiency of use. Probably both, as we transition to the substitute.

No matter what the substitute is, it will still be bound by the laws of supply and demand, and you will be worrying about the price of that resource. As for riding to and from work via leg power, food is fuel, and I'm sure Americans would start being criticized for eating too much to fuel their excessive exercising. O and we would probably live longer too, so then we would have to hear the complaining even longer.

Why no more wars in the Middle East? Just because of oil? If it isn't oil, it's going to be clean water, if it isn't clean water it's going to be food and so on and so on. You are mistaken if you think the "Democracy Movements" in the Middle East/North Africa are over politics. Those movements probably would never have occurred had it not been for skyrocketing food prices worldwide.

I apologize if you are just being snarky, but I see this ignorance all the time and it really grates on me.

Good News Everyone,

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-0...-gulf-war.html

Any tension that puts stress on the cartel is good for the markets. Few things would make me happier than seeing OPEC break up.

Oil is going up today partially because of OPEC's inability to come to an agreement. In the past, this has led to certain members of the cartel to begin undercutting one another in order to capture more of the market. Let's see if it holds true this time.

in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada it is currently 1.29 per liter.

Assuming a 1:1 exchange rate into USD we're looking at $4.87 / GAL for 87
furthermore, the increase per grade of gas is higher than yours. I believe 94 octane was 20 cents more per liter or approx 77c more per gal.

I fill my car's tank stateside every time I drive down.

The Oil and gas wholesale fell off the cliff after this hit the world market.

Makes you wonder what would happen if we drilled for a little oil.
I know the flat earth envirostatists wont allow that to happen.
Make you go HMMMMMM.

It always provides a big bump for a day or two, and then people remember that it hasn't materially changed supply or demand and things go back to right where they were a week prior.

Correct you are. Oil is up slighty today. Unleaded fell to $2.79
I see sub $3.50 gas at the pump in the future if all things hold steady.

The only people that make any money (or save any money) when the announcements are made to tap the SPI for a short period are oil traders. It's a sham, and truly is only political.

That said, I am starting to wonder the point of this thread. There are sites like www.gasbuddy.com and others where people can research the lowest priced gas near them on an hourly basis, so tracking it day by day here in a generic format seems a little pointless.

But before even that, the drilling comment to address short term pricing has as much validity as tapping the SPI (i.e. none). Exploration, testing, drilling, and production takes 5 - 10 yrs minimum for any reasonable field. Decisions made years ago are affecting supply right now. Decisions made now will take 5 - 10 years to have any noticeable effect. There's a separate discussion to be had about which decisions should be made now, but there needs to be some understanding that there is nothing anyone can do to affect oil pricing in the short term related to drilling choices here in the US. Nothing.

All true, but it did scare the traders for a day.

That piece of info right there makes this whole thread worthwhile, IMO.

LOL - I'm paying the equivalent of $6.61 a gallon here. Since the quake, the prices have gone up around a dollar a gallon.

But hey, if you don't want to pay, there is always public transportation. (Here anyway)

Wholesale is currently up $.13 TODAY. I dont know what the deal is, but if this increase holds were on our way up again.
Its $3.56 here now.
Bet on $3.70 by the end of the weekend. If the wholesale holds thru tomorrow.
