Finally, I was waiting for this for a while. I didn't want to go with the pod route, but I didn't want the stock filter either.

I don't know what is going to be different between the stock foam and the K&N filter. If the stock filter was a paper filter then I'd find the benefit, but honestly a properly oiled stock filter should filter ++ and should flow very well. It's the box that's the restriction.

That would depend on the foam they use for the stock filter. Without any comparative testing, you can't say one way or the other.

We've always used K&N Stock replacement filters on all our cars, and there seems to be a slight benefit, though hardly noticeable, at first. I just really enjoy the thought of never having to clean an air filter.

I'm just pointing out that paper-element filters are excellent filters as far as filtration goes, but they are restrictive. That's why cloth filters such as K&N are handy
A) They're washable and oilable (creating good filtration assuming the filter is oiled B) They're durable C) They flow well Seeing as foam filters do just as well as cloth filters... With a 300hp car you might gain 5hp if you replace a FILTHY paper air filter with a cloth one, on a 30hp (I'm being optimistic) motorcycle thats .5 HP? But then again the factory filter isn't paper... So the gains should be significantly less |

lol, I understand. I don't plan on arguing over how beneficial it is, especially with a mechanic
Even if this new filter lets in just a little bit more air with a stock bike i'm afraid it might push it even further past it's already lean setting, so I'll be getting this with a jet kit. So, sadly, I won't be able to report any hp gains solely to the credit of the filter. |

I took my filter out and the foam seems a little dense. More dense than any other filter I've seen before. Good for filtration. ??? for airflow. I'm curious to see how the K&N would do.

And even in cars, different brand of foam filters will yield different hp results. Why? because of the foam density they chose to use for the particular filter they produce.
I'm not advocating that the K&N is "better" than a stock filter, only that it's finally available. You are the one saying that it won't produce any more power than the stock foam filter. While that may be true, you can't say that until it's been tested, which it hasn't. lol... there are some that feel that pod/separate filters don't produce any more power than running with an airbox. I haven't seen any dyno tests, but I know for sure which is true. |

I am sure that pods will produce a lot more power. But once again they are going to be a whole lot more expensive, and the jetting will take a little longer to get right. Not to mention I'm sure you're getting slightly worse mileage with a bike that rich, something that I still enjoy about my stock ninjette
Also, more out of curiosity than anything, because i never saw a straight answer, do you have to worry about water with pods? sorry if it's a noob question, but I don't know the background behind this... |

My feeling is that the only time you need to worry about water with the pods is if the water level reaches as high as the pods are on the bike. If you're riding in water that deep, you've got other things to worry about.
You could drop the bike and submerge the pods, but you would have the same problem with the stock airbox, too. |

I don't think the peak gains with pods is that great actually (lordy here we go ) It helps the bike rev faster and react better from me butt dyno. On my ride last weekend it seemed on turns Kuro and myself would both peg the throttle into the turn and I would instantly start catching up to him. If we were in an all out 'drag race' I doubt there would've been a difference. Snorkel removal is good because it's aiding the restrictive air box breath

So, did you try a drag race?? That would have been interesting as I know Kuro's bike only has been desnorkeled and the QC.

so has anyone run an aftermarket filter without jetting? any noticeable problems? i understand the possible potential for running lean.
also, does anyone have a pic of the pod style filter installed on the 250? can't quite picture what it looks like installed.... |

"pod" type filter installed after the airbox has been removed. You definitely need to rejet (or shim) with a pod filter setup. With a replacement drop in filter you should at least shim the needles... which I feel should be done even on a stock bike. |

$60! That's awfully expensive when I can get the pod-style for $35ish and a jet kit for around $60..... |

This filter just slides right in.... and I'm sure you could find it for less than $60 if you hunt around. |

i decided to go for it and i purchased the drop-in filter. went for a 10 mile or so ride tonight to test it out.
first thing i noticed was that the bike sounds meaner now. at idle it sounded about the same, but other than that, it sounded more powerful... nothing really drastic, but noticable. feels a bit quicker, but that might be psychological. i can say that it is DEFINITELY smoother now. not saying that the bike ran rough before... but as i am accelerating, it is really smooth. i am very happy with this mod. it makes riding the bike more enjoyable. i was afraid that i was going to have to add another shim, but it isn't necessary. just a note, i removed my snorkel and added two washers. still got the stock exhaust since someone else won my area p. :P is the filter worth the money? to me it is. |

Did you do the filter at the same time as the snorkel and washers?

Hmm I can't see just replacing the slide in filter having an affect on what the bike sounds like. Could you possibly be confusing that meaner sound with the sound produced by air induction from removing the snorkel.
