MotoGP Sepang - Cancelled after 2 laps - Simoncelli has died
Tragic crash 2 laps in. Marco Simoncelli lost grip after running over an inside curb, and while trying to save it, cut back inside while falling off the bike. Colin Edwards and then Valentino Rossi were unable to avoid running right into him and his bike, and the impact was such that Marco's helmet was knocked off and he was sliding down the track like a rag doll, obviously unconscious. It was awful.
The race was red-flagged, and cancelled a few minutes later. Official word as of right now is the Marco is in critical condition. Good thoughts sent his way, and I hope he pulls through.

Yes a tragic moment of events. Thinking of Simo and a possible good outcome during these type of racing incidents.

A sad day indeed....a true and unique talent has been lost. When I watched the replays on the TV I said to my wife that I suspected he perished...then they cancel the rest of the event.
I hate to see these things, but it's a risk they take everytime they race....at least they love what they are doing and accept the risks involved. My next ride will be a passenger peg down tribute to Simoncelli. God Speed Marco................... |

Woke up at 3:45 local to watch it live. Accident itself started with a simple lowside, and he probably would have walked away . . . until Edwards ran him over and it got absolutely brutal. Knocked his helmet off 1/2 way through the crash, and head injury certainly is cause of death. Edwards was right next to Rossi and had nowhere to go.
The way Simoncelli rode, it was a matter of time before he was seriously injured (he'd already injured Pedrosa this year with recklessness and before that he'd drawn an official complaint from a group of other riders including Lorenzo, Stoner and Barbera, getting him hauled in front of Race Direction. When Casey Stoner calls you reckless, you know you are out there.) Lots of talk at the time about Simoncelli not making it through the season at that rate, but he just wouldn't dial it back. Regardless, it shouldn't have happened on a simple lowside and he didn't deserve death. Thoughts a prayers to his family and to Colin Edwards. I can't imagine living with the guilt, even though there was nothing he could do about it. Everyone be careful out there, particularly if you like to get your knee down. RIP Marco.

That was seriously a freak accident. He lowsided and lost the bike but then it regained gripped, and dragged him back on to the track. Awful. Im sure colin and rossi has it the worst right now, even knowing there was now where to go, beng that marco was dragged right in to the racing line.
He was a talent. Heart of a Lion. RIP |

Secondly, I dont put blame on Marco for that pedrosa crash. Pedrosa was clearly spinning the rear wheel and skidding out into Marcos line. Marco, being the fighter that he was, stuck with it. Pedrosa wrecking is on himself. No one else. |

Yeah, no way it should have happened on a simple lowside. Its just that he was involved in a lot of losses of traction. At those speeds, each time you lose control, you are rolling the dice.
Poor guy. Amazing talent and future champ lost. Understatement of the year by Stoner after the race: "Whenever the helmet comes off, that is not a good sign." Yup. Post race pics show that Rossi hit him directly at the same time as Edwards did. Brutal accident. Thoughts go out to Rossi, too, who was a good friend of Simoncelli.

This is 2 years in a row where there has been a death in grand prix racing. Incidentally both riders were ran over after a lowside. First Shoya Tomizawa in Moto2 and now Marco.
And yes pics show Rossi and Edwards hitting him. When i was watching it and from the angles of SPEEDTV, it looked like Rossi had cleared. It was only after I looked online did they show pictures of them both hitting him. |

Rest in peace - prayers and thoughts go to family and friends to all involved.
I figured he would be the nemesis on the track for years to come. Would love to have seen him ride in the IOM TT - his style of racing would have been awesome to see on the streets.

I can't bring myself to watch the crash. By far my favorite racer. I'm still trying to process that this is reality. Say what you will of his riding style, but his passionate desire to actually win and take chances and not just settle for mediocrity was the only reason I loved motogp these past two seasons. Even though I was just a fan, this really really hurts. I can't even begin to imagine how Rossi and Edwards are feeling.
Rest in Peace, indeed, Super Sic |

Ridiculous to talk about him being a dangerous rider and as if his "recklessness" was what caused the accident. I guess Hiro Aoyama rode recklessly and that's why he broke his back. Ben Spies has been very reckless lately and that's why he had massive bruising to his ribs which saw him pull out of the last two races. Lorenzo rode recklessly and so eventually lost his ring finger and the title. I guess Stoner and Rossi even have it coming if you look at the amount of crashes they've put in -B.S.!!! I saw the race. He was alone when his bike low sided (could've happened to anyone), and tragically dragged him back onto the racing line where Colin and Valentino had no chance whatsoever of avoiding.
SuperSic was truly a rising star in MotoGP. He loved to race and to fight. Lorenzo and Stoner blew his aggression out of proportion and demonized him early on in the season. Everyone was scared at how fast he was. Vale and even Dani backed him and his competitiveness until he made the mistake that took Dani out (many still believe it was Dani's fault). Dani was eventually told to shut it because he had previously done the same to Hayden. SuperSic will be sorely missed. |

Two weeks ago our friend from the R1forum lost his life at Road Atlanta, Last week was Indy, now this week is motoGP.
Motorsports is taking its toll....... So many injuries and lose of life.. Brings ya to tears http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/oth...oGP-crash.html I had thought Colin pushed Marco back under his own bike.... Now I understand why Rossi acted like he did. |

RIP indeed, someone on another forum mentioned that he was probably already leading and getting a knee down in the place where all the riders go. I like that image.
Thoughts going out to Rossi and Edwards and all the motogp family. Can't watch the video either. Watched Dan Wheldon race live and am thinking of taping all future events. Shook me up pretty good. |

RIP fellow rider.
I watched the video. A few questions. Why was he on the ground like that heading perpendicular across the track? The bike was still rolling so it wasn't a true lowside. In the video it almost looks like he was trapped underneath the bike, but I don't see how that is possible. Can anyone elaborate so the rest of us can avoid the same problem?

He tried to save the lowside with his knee/elbow and the front end caught traction. When it did he was pulled back across the track and into traffic. It is just one of those things; had he let it go it would have been like any other lowside that routinely happens in this sport. Sic wasn't one to just give up and let it go if he thought he could save it a push on. For 99.99% of the normal motorcycle population - you can avoid this by just letting the lowside happen when its lost and mitigating as much damage as possible. Lots of potential lowsides end up as highsides or compounded situations. The guys in the MotoGP paddock are the .01%.

BTW, to drive Randy Mamola's point across and add to NM4WD's observations: In the Showa Tomizawa incident, the bike did the same thing and even picked itself back up without the rider!

I wouldn't necessarily point the finger at traction control for this incident, it's probably just mechanical luck that the front end regained more traction while the bike was leaned all the way over with Marco still hanging off of the right side (pretty much being dragged on the ground the bike was already over so far on its side) This pic (intentionally linked) shows Marco already on the ground beside the bike as it's starting to turn inwards.

(regardless, I don't remember Tomizawa's bike getting back up anyway. He hit the astroturf when he went wide under power and lost the back end. His and Marco's accident have some similarities in outcomes, but they crashed initially for very different reasons.). EDIT: rewatched the Tomizawa video. The bike (sans rider) just highsided and flipped when it went perpendicular to the track at high speed. No different than any other time we see bikes flipping and twirling either on the asphalt or gravel traps.
