A US police officer has resigned after being caught on camera racing a member of the public from the lights.

The incident happened in Montgomery, Alabama last Sunday and was filmed by Lawrence Spillers who was waiting at a red light on his Honda CBR600 when Alabama police officer Carlos Rogers appears to his side on a police-spec Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. Spillers jokes about the cold weather and asks if the officer wants a race, to which the officer replies “I got turbo”.

As the light turns green, the police officer speeds ahead before being caught up by Spillers. Upon reaching the next light they joke about the race and then race for the second time, reaching speeds of 72mph - 12mph over the speed limit – before letting off.

When confronted with the matter, Montgomery Police Chief Kevin Murphy commented: "There may be a traffic violation charge against this former officer for drag racing and the elements are there, one just has to look at the video and see for themselves".

However, Spillers’ take on it was that they were having fun and said: "I don't think he should be charged with anything and I don't think he should have lost his job."

Murphy did not agree to his retort and told local TV news channel KFOR: “For the very thing that we are out here enforcing the law, for an officer to cross that line and violate it, there’s no excuse, I will not tolerate it and he is no longer wearing the badge."
