I understand the quality vs. cost discussions. We all don't have the luxury of buying whatever gear we'd prefer without regard to cost, otherwise we'd all have $10K+ riding outfits that are custom fit, fashionable, and world-class safe from toe to hairline. But I don't understand when style takes up a big part of the discussion. Which is really the distinction between the sneaker-type and boot-type motorcycle gear. It's like a skydiver choosing between parachutes because of the color.

Okay, I haven't been on the track yet (soon!) but that phrasing bugs me -- from everything I've read the street is MORE dangerous than the track. If I wouldn't wear the gear to the track, I won't wear it for the street. Sure I may opt for the two piece for street riding so that it's easier to change out of when I get to work but it's still something I'd wear to the track.
Sorry, rant over.

they either don't understand risks or are willing to increase risk to gain convenience or style points.

I'd say a more accurate analogy is
the sneaker person packs a primary chute.
the boot person packs both primary and secondary chutes.

statistics may show 5000:1 of the time the sneaker guy would be ok with the primary chute.

would i parachute without a secondary canopy?
My answer is no, the risk is too great.

i know people that had ankle injuries in the construction trades, and the quality of life afterwards was terrible.

living with a permanently injured ankle is not a risk i'm willing to take.

Sorry I meant it better than it came out.. I'm one of those that loses the wording when trying to type or write it out.
My thinking is that tracks are usually at a higher speed than you should be at on streets, therefore needing more protection. The streets are more dangerous when it comes to obstacles, I was purely thinking of speeds at the time.
-- Good correction, thanks.

To the OP: you've gotten lots of good feedback, especially on the importance of full boots. When you start riding to work, just leave a pair of sneakers or loafers in the office (that's what I do).

As for boot suggestions: you can do pretty well for $200-$250. I have a pair of Sidi Fusion Rains for touring/rainy/cold weather (non-perf'd), and SMX5s for everything else. If money were no object, I would never go out without the Vortice's. The SMX-5s and the Sidi Cobra's are the most comfortable boots I've tried on.

One last thing -- try on a pair of Sidis and a pair of A* or something else. The Sidis fit me a bit narrower, which is why I prefer my A* for comfort. So if you have skinny Italian feet, you'll probably prefer the Sidis; if you have big ol' American feet like mine, you may want to go with another solid brand.

Good luck!

Agreed on all counts. I have both Sidis (Vertigo Corsas) and Alpinestars (SMX-5's), and the Sidi does fit a little bit narrower, but still comfortable.
