Observant

So today I was riding home on my usual route when I rode past a house that I've driven past for years and noticed something I've never noticed before, a cat on a lease with other dogs. Now after years of riding you'd think I would've noticed something like this driving by at some point. That got me thinking, ever since I started riding (keep in mind its only been a week at this point) in that short amount of time I believe I've become more observant of my surroundings. The reason for this post wasn't simply to tell you about my day, it was to ask if anyone else has noticed an "upgrade" in the observing abilities?

I don't think I see as much of the scenery as I do when I'm in the cage. In the car you can afford to be a little more careless. I focus on good clean lines in curves, and scanning ahead for trouble. Day dreaming and sight seeing on the bike can get you squished

I ride defensively so my eyes and head are always looking around for cagers that might not"see" me so yes I do notice that I am more observant of things instaed of just passing by it.

Oh I'm not saying something like day dreaming, take the cat noticing for example, that was a potential hazard with all the dogs, I just happened to notice a cat in the middle of the danger.

That makes sense. I keep my eyes on dogs, but I have no idea what color the shutters on the houses are, or what those people in the backyard are up to.

See things like people playing in the yard is another good example, are they playing football? Are they throwing the ball to each other? Are they throwing it in your direction? Things like that result from being observant.

If it's not relevant to my safety, it's low priority. That doesn't mean I don't see some cool views on the bike. It's my favorite way to travel.

That makes sense to prioritize things based on their danger level but that also requires you to notice those things to assess their danger level. I'm not saying I'm so observant I know what kind of socks some dude on the road has on, I'm saying when your riding you notice a lot more because you have to to make it from A to B without becoming strawberry jam.

I do notice that I'm a more defensive driver in the car since I got into motorcycles. I'm still more lax in the car, but I do get a lot more concerned about those left turning blinkers, and overall pay more attention.

You better ride defensively and beware of the cat should it get off that leash (unless you mean the cat and dogs were renting and they were all on the lease).
