think i know the answer, kind of

what would cause my bike to not idle right? if I set idle any less than 2k it acts like its out of gas and dies. when riding from a stop it revs but no power and when I eventually hit around 40mph it sputters then goes like hell. I cleaned the carbs best I could, have fresh gas, recent valve adjustment, sprayed wd40 around all the hoses, even took out the two washers under each needle. oh, and the choke no longer does anything even though its connected and moves freely. do I have a carb gremlin? thinking of trying 3 washers on the needles. anything else I'm missing? stock everything except k&n and desnorkeled

Has it previously run properly with the K&N filter and no snorkel? If so...

A problem idling happens in the pilot circuit, so spacing the needled up won't fix it. I'd bet it's another case of clogged pilot circuits (pilot jets, and related passages). You may also have other carb clogs too.

it ran with the k&n and a slip on at the time for a brief period till my original carb bit the dust (totally my doing). I just put the slip on back on and she idles good around 1700rpm and clears its throat so to speak a little sooner than 40mph. idle screws are at 2.5 turns. will turning them to 2.25 or 2 lean it out?

They should be adjusted for highest idle speed. If you're going to be off a little, err on the rich side slightly. Turning them counterclockwise makes the idle richer. Here's the procedure:
