rusty exhaust tubes

It's almost not remarkable for anyone else, but everytime when I clean or see my bike I hate to see those rusty exhaust tubes. I just can't stop looking at them. This is a 3 year old bike that I bought from a friend. Have you got any solutions to make this shiny again?
I've been told to be careful when I do something about it as I might make holes in them.

EDIT: solution post 14 !!

Mine aren't rusty but they are as hell are ugly and need to be replaced ASAP (dented/cracked).

Your best bet is probably a full system exhaust. Can get a full system under $300 with shiny/pretty tubes

get rid of the rust with electrolysis, clean them, then paint them with high temp paint. problem solved.

p.s. rust holes are only a problem if it's actually rusted all the way through the pipe. if this was the case your pipes would be falling apart already. give the rust spots a tap, if your finger goes through, you have holes, if not you don't.

Thx for the response

Although I like the idea of pimping my bike with a full exhaust, I believe that this won't be the only mod I'll have to make, no? The problem is that I don't have the time nor the means (read: money) for those additional mods.

I do like the solution Alex.s is offering. I just don't understand the electrolysis part, is this something you can do at home? if not, how much will that cost me? All I want is that rusty look gone.

EDIT: Would it be bad just to put the high temp paint on just like that? it probably is, but I can always ask

If you can find a container big enough to put your headers into, you can use the electrolysis method.

I wouldn't paint over the rust. They'll most likely just keep rusting underneath the paint.

basically you take the headers off, stick them in a big container filled with water and salt, connect the headers to one side of a battery, and connect a wire to the other side of the battery then stick it in the water. after a while it gets the rust off. if you paint over the rust, the paint will simply fall off and continue rusting underneath the paint. search youtube for rust + electrolysis and you should find many tutorials on it, its quick and easy and most of all cheap. a can of high-temp paint will run you about $10

edit: here you go:

Link to original page on YouTube.

i wouldn't recommend using a battery charge you like... it's pretty easy to fry the charger.

p.s. don't have it near an open flame. it produces hydrogen. although it's highly entertaining to light the bubbles on fire

hey guys, I found the cheapest solution possible. I got some of this stuff and started scrubbing for 2.5 hours
Although it's not perfect, I'm very happy with the results

Just make sure you coat the pipes with something, otherwise, it'll just rust again.

Has anybody tried wrapping their exhaust with the high temp wraps?

If it works for cars to lower underhood temperatures, it should work for biked just as well.

some people seem to think those make pipes rust faster by trapping in moisture. I have no experience with them, but that's what I've heard

Not recommended. These quotes are directly from the owner of Area P:

The "wrap" does not allow it to cool and dry naturally. As you retain heat and moisture within thin gauge stainless steel, it will become brittle over time and potentially fail.

Pro polish a good option in Europe, but it isn't sold in the US as far as I can tell. Reading some other forums, Nevr Dull comes up repeatedly as a good option for the US. I've not used it, but just ordered a can ($6) and will let you know. Available at (yuck) just about any cruiser shop I looked at online.

I wasn't really thinking about a power gain, just something to help the bike run cooler, living in Texas and having to put up with 100+ degree days for months on end is not as fun on 2 wheels as it might seem, especially in heavy traffic. The heat coming off the road and the other cars is enough to make you pass out, adding the bike itself as another heat source just makes it even worse.

But the heat tape doesn't make the bike (or a car) run cooler. It just protects that localized area of where the wrap is from getting quite as hot. The heat the engine creates remains exactly the same, so the radiated heat to the rider is going to be similar no matter what.

Got my can in yesterday. Worked like a charm when combined with elbow grease. Recommended for rusty pipes.

When I bought my ninja, I had some rust forming on my can. I just took a piece of aluminum foil, dipped it in water, then rubbed over the rusty areas and my rust came off like a charm. Granted, it was on the polished exhaust can and wasn't nearly as thick as those pictures but it might be worth a try...

Is there any reason for why exhausts are not painted/coated with something for protection? Heat or anything, or is it just about the cost? I think matte black pipes would look alot better

Price. Ceramic coatings are about the only thing that holds up to that temp, and it's pricey.

Ah, Belgium. I visited there in the early-mid 80's (before most here were born). Nice trip.
