Cam chain replacement dodge?

I am looking at replacing the cam chain in my 1990 GPX250. I notice that there is a small piece cast into the bottom engine case under the crankshaft cam chain sprocket which appears to be there as some sort of guide to stop the cam chain coming off at that bottom point. I think that by removing this small cast in guide it would be then possible to change the cam chain without splitting the cases? Has anyone done this? If so how did you do it?

I'm not sure, but if you have to ask about grinding metal inside the cases, maybe you shouldn't. Can you confidently ensure no metal dust or chips will end up in the case? Or do you want to tear down the engine to flush it properly?
