The most prolific crew chief in modern grand prix history never bought into the belief that Valentino Rossi would jump on the flawed Ducati Desmosedici GP11 and immediately reach for the champagne bottle. It doesn’t work that way, though some believe Rossi can do anything, and often he can. The belief that he could switch brands and start winning was created when he rode the even more flawed YZR-M1 to a thrilling victory over Max Biaggi in his Yamaha debut at Welkom, South Africa, in 2004. But that was a different time and under different circumstances, and the start of this season presented a number of impediments.
