I didn't wreck! Once Upon a Time...

Lately I have seen a lot of people posting telling us about wrecks they just had on their bikes, and I thought it would be good to share a similar tail but with a happy ending.

Once Upon a Time... Like this last Tuesday. I was heading home after a class I am taking in Provo, Utah. (As a little back ground, of all the places I have driven/rode I believe Utah to have the absolute worst drivers, bar-none). I was riding State Street on my way to I-15, when "the inevitable"--to quote many others-- happened. An Idiot who obviously compensates for the size of the masculine member of his body by owning a pickup the size of North Dakota turned left right infront of me.

The small man was leaving "LA Boxing" (obviously another form of compensation) and turned onto State Street in his bahemouth sized Dark Grey, Dodge Ram, Diesel, Quad Cab, Long Bed, Duel wheel rear axel, and lifted so high I'm suprized Lightning didn't stike him down for his pitiful attempt at the second tower of Babel.

I was going about 50mph on State Street, which was five over the speed limit in this area, but It is a risk I accept. I was in the inside lane and only about 50 yards from where the stubby individual in his pickup emerged.

The prick, obviously saw me the entire time because he completely gunned it comming out of the parking lot, hopping the back tires of his ride as he launched off the drive way, blowing thick black smoke from his tail pipe.

With no warning I braked hard, released the breaks, swerved right, and braked again. Barely missing the back end of his monstrocity of a vehicle by about a foot. I was safe... But the story doesn't end there.

The thin penciled individual ran a red light at the following intersection and of course I came to a nice safe stop. When the light turned I came up to the next stop light and got into the left turn lane to find the same pick up stopped a few cars infront of me becuase there were cars already stopped not allowing him to run another light.

We both made the left turn onto University Parkway and I speed up passed him and express my emotions about the situation by extending a certain finger on my left hand. I then continued to manouver my way through traffic to get as far away from the psycho as I could so there was no chance of him doing something stupid around me again.

And my bike and I lived happily ever after.

The moral of this story is be prepared for the idiots, know what you are going to do before you have to do it, and then get the hell away from the creep before he has a chance to do something equaly if not more stupid.

This is my route and where it happened.

Glad you're OK. Were there two lanes of traffic available in the same direction? If so, you want to put your bike as far away from driveways and other entrances on the side of busy roads like that by being in the left lane instead of the one closest to the curb. There are always going to be people coming right out into traffic whether they see you or not, some with malicious intent but most who are just utterly clueless and truly didn't "see you" even while looking right at you. Staying a lane away can help lower the number of times you have to practice your emergency braking and swerving.

Yeah there were multiple lanes and as soon as this idiot was done with his anticks I moved a full two lanes away from him. I try not to ride in the right hand lane because of so many people who don't stop when they come to a cross street.

Here in Utah the people seem to think it is kosher to stick the nose of their vehicle about 6 feet into the first lane of traffic before coming to a stop.

I'm going to guess the "LA Boxing" is a strip Club or bar of some sort. My first impression would be drunk driver and stay away from him right off the bat. My second thought would be not to do anything that would get you shot or run over by some drunk that isn't thinking straight and will get extremely agressive if even remotely provoked.

OK, next time you go by I'd go in a either punch the guy in the nose or have someone else there do it in the ring then laugh at him.

I know the story wasn't necessarily supposed to incite humor, but I was laughing out loud here in my cubicle at it. I feel the same way regarding the compensation factor of pencil sized member owners of gigantic trucks jacked all the way up to the sky. Glad to hear you are okay!!

Never trust a truck that has a bigger differential than it's front tire, especially if you have to look up to see the door handle.
