Front Sprocket Gunk?

Hello. This is rather new to me, but i'm sure familiar with all of you. I use Motul chain clean and lube. I lube my chain regularly, but notice the front sprocket has so much black gunk....me thinks I should clean it out (2009 250r around 6000 miles).
Can someone recommend an effective degreaser or any other spray I can use? Is this difficult to do? Someone must know of an easy method to clean this? Thanks guys.

Mineral Spirits works great for de-greasing and cleaning. Kerosene works just as well.

Personally, I love the old trusty paint brush plus kerosene.

Get a marker and mark the shift lever location the use a 10mm wrench and remove the shifter at the motor shaft(it going through the cover you want to remove). Then use an 8mm socket to remove the three bolts that hold on the cover, WARNING be sure not to lose the TWO dowl pins that locate the cover.

It's super easy

Yeah, I just take the cover off, and use a plastic paint scraper to scrap all the crud out, and then slap it back on there. No sense in getting spotless with it...its just gonna crud up again.

Took my cover off and pulled out a ton of gunk with a rag then flooded it with WD-40.

I use gojo hand cleaner and add most of bottle to a bucket. stir it into just enough water to submerse the cover. let it sit, over night if you can. then a little rubbing with rag and rinse does great. can toss chain in too, sprocket if you're super ambitious. Just be sure to re-lube it when done.

Back in the day, I used "GUNK" on gunk and the rest of the bike to, chrome, engine. Back then it came in a quart can and you sqirted a good bit in a cup and used a brush like the one pictured above. Today you can get it in a spray can.

It nails grease, it's got a wonderful smell and you can rinse it off with cold water.

cleaning was no problem, but the cleaning solvent erased the marked location of the clutch lever. It shifts ok, but feels different than last year. That lever position simply raises and lowers the position that's all right? so, really it's just rider preference whether lever is higher or lower?

Yes with-in reason, to low or high makes miss shifts or accidental ones more likely. It is very easy to adjust, loosen the two nuts and rotate the bar then snug the nuts back down. Takes about 5mins and makes makes it more comfortable.

A link for pictures and better details

If you removed the three bolts and the little lever from the shift rod, then dowel pins are stuck. Try using WD-40 to loosen them. As you look at the cover, one is on the bottom right corner and the other is top left, just below that round hole/divot in the cover. Spray between the cover and the engine case and it should get in there.
