almost saw someone die this morning

So this morning i'm heading to work and i'm stopped at a red light, I see a young guy on a bike (bicycle) hes riding on the sidewalk coming from the opposite direction on the same side of the street i'm waiting for the red. This idiot decides that lights don't apply to him and runs the red light as soon as the cross traffic light turns green. As he gets into the intersection, the car start moving and hits him and he flys off his bike. (it was kind of funny), he gets back up and says sorry to the driver and continues on his way. Well the chick in the car got pissed cuz she was in brand spanking new car, she still didn't have her license plates...so she makes the guy stop while she inspects her car for scratches and stuff...luckily all was well and they all went on their merry way, but man i gotta tell you...for a second there I thought I was going to see a dead body. eeeeck!

OMG! I see cyclists do that kind of stuff ALL the time. I dont know what makes them think they are that much more immune than us motorcyclists who can dodge faster AND "hopefully" is wearing armor. I see them ride up to a red light and keep going like they think they'll make it past the intersection before cross-traffic hits them. Just ridiculous.

As a cyclist, I must admit, we all run red lights at one point or another. The sensors just don't pick us up. HOWEVER, I sit there for a couple of cycles, waiting for a car to pull up to make a left turn. If I have sat through two cycles and no cars are near, I will run the light. Going straight, on the other hand, I always wait for the green.

Same here. There are various times when I've had to do the same but it's never smart to just go straight without slowing down OR stopping and I just cant fathom what is going on through their heads when they decide to play russian roulette with essentially battering rams.

ya well, this guy was just being stupid...it had nothing to do with sensors.

I gotta say, as funny it was to see the guy hop, skip and jump to gain his stance, I couldn't help cover my mouth with my hand in shock. I felt helpless for that split second. I laugh about it cuz it all turned out well, but it could have been much worse. He was just a kid wearing a face mask with no helmet...looked like he was a high school kid on his way to school.

I guess it is the motorcyclist in me that says helmets are ok. I also know that kids follow what their heroes do. So if a kid is into cycling and he/she see's a pro rider riding with a helmet, they are more likely to do the same. I won't wear a helmet if I am just putting up and down my street in the neighborhood with my wife, but if I leave that space, I have a helmet on.

I even put reflective tape on the helmet to help it stand out.

As for the guy, what a moron. He probably was cussing the drivers for "not looking out for him" too. It wouldn't surprise me. I bet the incident won't change his behavior either because "his skills kept him alive".

The cyclist obviously needs and after market slip-on because his current exhaust.... opening(?)... isn't loud enough to be heard by cagers.

Not so much of a slip on as a slip in.

Wow not even a helmet? Lucky for him. Sometimes I contemplate why some people have those backpacks with built in speakers blasting their noise/music (your choice). Sure it's annoying but hey, maybe they got the right idea.

I refuse to ride and listen to music. I need every advantage I can get while I'm out on the bicycle. I'm going about 25mph tops on the flats while I can be getting passed by someone doing 60mph...I like to hear them coming.

Thats true, except I wasnt even thinking of those things used on bicycles. I just see people with them all over downtown walking on the streets. Annoys the hell out of me because, 1) its usually not music i like so therefore i consider it noise, and 2) the speakers installed there usually suck so they sound like a muddled mess. I do love live music however so if someone is riding a bicycle and playing the guitar, i'd be cool with that.

I can totally relate! I was walking to class one day and a biker pulled up on the right to a car that was turning right and the biker didn't realize the car just might turn right on red because you can do that. The car hit the biker but it was at such a slow speed the biker didn't fly off. Him and his bike basically went under the front bumper of the car and one of his shoes flew off. Not sure if he was wearing a helmet cz it was a few months ago, but it was really funny when he just got up, put his shoe back on and the lady put her car in reverse so he could get his bike out and he just biked off like nothing happened at all.

I don't bike around this town....it's too dangerous...traffic is crazy in downtown madison

Same in Addison (Really close to Dallas). People drive their E or S-Class AMG Mercedes, Porches and BMW M3's to idiotically. Not to mention all of the Armada Platinums/QX65's.
I think that before someone buys a big SUV, they should pass some kind of test. Not necessarily be a certain age (I drive and F-150 for God's sake, and I drive better than those idiots in their "tuned" ricers.), but have real driving skill.
