Idling issues 2005 Kawasaki Ninja 250
Just picked up a 2005 Kawasaki Ninja EX250F with 8,000 miles. It had been sitting for the last 3 years. The gas was extremely old and carbs were gummed up and dirty. I drained all the gas out of carb and tank, tooks carbs off and cleaned them thoroughly along with jets. Put everything back together and now it will start but only idle for a couple seconds and die. Both carbs have full bowls of fuel, nothing out the overflow though. Choke fully on, only runs a few seconds. Choke off, can't get it running. Once running, cannot turn of choke or open throttle as it will just die. tried adjusting the idle screw linked between the two down all the way and half turn in to just barely open the flapper valve, it started easier but didn't stay running. Any ideas?
Thanks!!! |

Nevadawolf was just welcoming you to the site....
I would guess that you have your main jets and circuits clean, but the smaller ones are still clogged, so it’s trying to idle on the main jet. When you open the throttle, does it dies right away, or does it try and rev then die? Can you slowly open and get it to rev? I would also double check all the vacuum lines that attach to the carbs. Did you split the carbs to clean them? If so you mad need to reset the throttle blades as well with some feeler gauges. |

vacuum lines are good, replaced one cracked one. made sure all tiny holes in both jets were clear of debris and through center holes. good fuel through both carbs. idle screw set just 1/2 turn past starting point. idle mixture screws turned out 2 1/2 to 3 turns on both carbs, choke fully on, starts then dies. will stay running sometimes but with any throttle, dies no matter how subtle it's applied. spark plugs are older i'm assuming look oily and black. have new ones on order, nobody had in stock. not sure if that would make a huge difference because it's already firing, just not staying running, so maybe weak spark? uhhh....

The main jets are clear, but there are small passages in the carb that meter the air and control the idle jet that basically runs the bike below 4 or 5k rpm. If those are still blocked, it will fall on its face when you try and run it. The only other thing to check are the diaphragms and the needles to make sure they are in right. If they are catching or stuck, it would also choke it off.
Bad news is, I think you are going to have to pull the carbs out again. I found that running cleaner through all the small passages, and ultrasonic cleaning in vinegar and degreaser mix worked really well. I also always replace the screws on the bowls with hex head screws in SS to make sure they come off again later. I mostly find old filter material in the small passages in the intake part of the carb cause the problems. Old filters get dry, some one fires up the bike, and it crumbles into the carbs. |

15 years old, only 8000 miles and sitting the last 3 years
Aggressive carb circuit clearing methods coupled with automatic replacement of all consumables would be strongly advised. Sounds like some attention to the carb enrichener (aka starting circuit) and float circuits were not dealt with. Pilot screw orings replaced? Air correction circuits confirmed clear? I'd guess not. How clean the carbs look is not necessarily the 100% indicator....its what you *can't* see that'll get ya every time.
