some of these are older models. Like the bell star for example, The ones on closeout are 2010 models.
does the age affect how durable these helmets are? |

Ummm…. you close out a product when you've got a few left that aren't moving.
Expecting a nice selection kind of misses the whole point of deep discounts from the retailer's POV. If the helmet is desirable it will sell at a higher price. Snooze and lose.

Another thing to keep in mind with clearance helmets:
Typically helmets go on clearance towards the end of their shelf lives. That's right, helmets have a life-span of use, and the foam degrades after time. From my reading in 'Motorcyclist' magazine, helmets have a shelf life of 7 years, and a wear life of 5 years, with 7 years from the manufacture date being the max time. For example, say you buy a brand new helmet in 2012 that's been manufactured and inspected in 2008. That's 4 years of shelf time. That means you're safe to wear that helmet for 3 years before you need to replace it. Now, say you buy a brand new helmet in 2008 that's been manufactured and inspected in 2008. That's 0 years of shelf time. That means you're safe to wear that helmet for 5 years before you need to replace it. Finally, say you buy a brand new helmet in 2010 that's been manufactured and inspected in 2008. That's 2 years of shelf time. That means you're safe to wear that helmet for 5 years before you need to replace it. Again, 5 years of wearing, 7 years of shelf storage, or 7 years total, whichever comes first. Make sure to check the date on the sticker inside your helmet when you buy it and make a note of when to replace your helmet. |

Helmet foam degrades when not in use? I don't buy it. I understand that is true while it is being used. Body oils, elements, cleaning chemicals - they will all break down resins and whatnot. When it isn't being used the helmet isn't encountering anything to degrade it. MAYBE the resins will harden a bit? Doubftul though.
As for Motorcyclist magazine condemning old helmets - Read this. A journalist got fired for disagreeing with Snell standards because it was going to cost the magazine advertizing money from Shoei and Arai. That's right, if the helmet makers don't like what you publish, you lose money. I would bet you anything that their helmet "sponsors" had some say in that article. |

Buy it or not.... Some track day/race orgs WILL tech your helmet as well as your bike. If you lid is older than 5yrs and you don't have a newer one with you, your day is over before you start.
Ask me how I know....

I still like and bought the clown helmet... Woulda bought it if it was 9 years old, just paid less. As long as the insides aren't hard as a rock ill wear it. Ask me how I know the foam gets hard as a rock in old helmets.

wood rots. steel rusts. silver tarnishes. rubber dries and cracks. plastic gets brittle. Even diamonds have a half life (very very long time, but still...). Why would foam be any different? My post was just a PSA to remind people that helmets age and we should all be aware of how old our helmet is. 5 years of use, or 7 years total of combined shelf/wear time is a good rule of thumb. Whether you believe that foam ages or not, it's still a good idea to wear a current helmet. Additionally, in your attempt to discredit my info source (which was a very good link, thank you for the insight. I had not considered potential bias) you brought up another good point. Safety standards change as more and more research is done. Typically, helmets go on sale for large discounts when they are not sold and are just taking up space. All concerns about the foam aside, this means that when you buy a helmet at a steep discount, you're likely buying an older helmet that has not been built to the most current safety standards. So even if there was bias from helmet companies when Motorcyclist suggested the 5-7 rule based on aging foam, it doesn't matter; in the 5-7 year lifespan of a helmet, safety standards used to make helmets have changed and it's still time for a new helmet. In my mind, (bias or no bias) the 5-7 year rule still stands. It is still a good idea to know what year your helmet was tested in so that you know how old the foam is and to what standards the helmet was designed. |

This thread turned into a very thought-provoking one on clearance helmets. I have crashed enough where I've had to replace my helmet regularly anyway , but I never put much thought into shelf life. Good points made here. Thanks for the info!

I think of helmets like shoes. A pair gets old, replace. Bargain price? Buy!
Sure you may only get 2 years out of a discounted helmet (may have already been sitting on a shelf for 3 years), but at $200-$300, who cares? |
