Thanks for the links. This might sound stupid but how are these normally connected? Rubber hose with ring clamps?

all the ones that I've seen, yes. there is a DIY that Kkim did that had some pics of the one on his bike, at least I think it was Kkim. If I can't find it just look around on the DIY's it is on there somewhere with a paragraph devoted to it

nope, not my bike. I still have the original hose coming out of the crankcase with a rather large fuel filter on the end of it.

That DIY was from Vex. Later in that thread, I posted most of the measurements for the crankcase vent, both for attachment to the hose and directly to the case.

That is unusual Kelly. hehe. What purpose does that serve? Just asking

Is a vent filter recommended guys?
I understand that these are connected to the airbox for environmental purposes correct?

I wonder how the vapor return affect the burn. insignificant I assume??

Thanks for the replies folks. Much appreciated.

normally, the crankcase is vented to the airbox to catch and recycle fumes and oil from the engine. when you remove the airbox, there's nowhere to connect.

the fuel filter attached to the stock hose prevents oil from dumping straight out of the tube in case of a tipover and also filters whatever air that travels in and out of the crankcase. it's also a great visual indicator to see if oil has migrated out of the crankcase which would collect in that translucent filter. I intended to replace it, but after I installed it, I liked the benefits using it provided. It may not look trick, but is much more effective than a pretty vent filter.

In the old days, crankcases used to vent straight out through a tube to atmosphere, so having it not connected to the airbox is doing the engine no harm.

I figured as much as far as the venting into the atmosphere. Do you think it has any positive or negative effects with being sent back into the motor?

Thats a good set-up you got there though. I think I'll keep an eye out for something similar.

this was done primarily for emissions control and to keep oil from spilling onto the road if the bike tips over.

under normal operation conditions, I don't see a problem of routing the fumes back to the airbox.
