Help crank but no spark
Ok i have exhausted all my searches and the faq and wiki pages on the site, so i am asking for help.
I got a 2003 ninja 250 as a project bike from a friend. It sat for a while and i am trying to just get it running before i dig deep into it. Here are the details -No keys so ordered new ebay ignition -dead battery so got new battery -charged up battery and hooked up ignition we have power! -horn lights blinkers brake lights all work (headlight is intermittent only seems to work while the bike is cranking) -bike cranks no problem -checked for spark no spark replaced plugs still nothing -checked ignition fuse looks good -kill switch in the off position no crank -in gear with clutch pulled in and kick stand up it cranks so safety switches seem to be good -checked for any unplugged, loose, or chewed up wiring and couldn't find anything -checked the 30amp fuse on the solenoid looked good i'm stumped any help would be great! |

Welcome Mike!
Gas + air + spark = a running bike. Looks like your next step would be to ohm check the coils to continue your search for spark.

Your problem is because you bought an Ebay/Chinese ignition. it does not have the 1/8 watt 100 ohm resistor to power the CDI to spend spark. Also, you have to make sure that the wiring pinout and and layout of the ebay ignition matches your harness. You'll have to take a part your ignition to verify. Be careful as the screws and aluminum are cheaply soft and you'll strip the threads easily.

You're looking at the grey wire there coming off the ignition switch, going to the CDI box. I'm pretty sure it is getting power from the switch and you should be seeing something like 8v at the connection to the CDI box, but sometimes they run backwards and actually send power to ground through the 100 ohm resistor. Either way, you can check it with a DMM. There is a chance the new switch cluster you bought doesn't have it, but seems like it ought to if they are selling it as direct replacement. Pretty unlikely both coils pooped the sheets at the same time. CDI box could be fried, but that too is pretty uncommon. |

ok so tested the ignition coils and both are good.
Any other ideas other than the ignition not having the 100ohm resistor? |

Yup definitely doesn't have the 100ohm resistor.
And the DC volts at the ignition plug and cdi of the gray wire is 12.5 I saw somewhere it should be about 6 where should the resistor be wired into? Thanks |
