Starting Problem

So, my 2006 Ninja 250 has started to misbehave on starting. I turn the ignition to on and get my neutral light. I press the start button. I hear an audible click (relay?) and the bike electrically shuts completely off, no neutral light...nothing . Turning the key off and then on does not help...it stays off. If I pull the 30 amp ignition fuse (the one that is in its own special setup) and put it back, I will get another shot at starting it. Sometimes it will start, sometimes it clicks and dies again. Once it is running, it runs without any problems at all. Any ideas? I chased up most of the wires looking for ground faults but didn't find anything.

Thanks in advance for any help at all!

Al

What motofool said.. Sounds like a battery issue, may be a connection issue

So you checked all the wires and connections, an found them to be good?... What else did you do?

Just checked the wires. No pinches, all tight, etc....no crud on the battery connections. Anyway, I found it odd that removing and replacing the fuse would give me another shot at starting it.

I'll try a new battery as suggested to see where it gets me.

Thanks.

Test your battery first, unless you just have new batteries lying around... Multimeters save folks money

That is kinda funny about the fuse; you tried a new fuse?

I do have batteries to try out and a multimeter...I guess the multimeter is easiest.

As for the fuse, nope, I take that 30A fuse out of the harness and put it right back. The fuse is good. So when I've been stuck trying to start it away from home, I just reach down, pull the fuse, pop it back, pray it will start!

I would pick up another fuse and some dielectric grease. Check the terminals and connections for corrosion.

If pulling the fuse and replacing it changes anything, there are connection problems somewhere.

The 30A main fuse is all power to the bike - it's the big wire coming out of the battery. If you have any lights at all, it's not the problem (unless it's some weird issue like a half-blown fuse).

Your symptoms are typical of a dead battery. There's enough juice to light up the lights and maybe click the relay, but not to actually turn the starter. A quick load test is just to watch the battery voltage while you're trying to crank it. I've seen varying minimums listed, but it should stay above ~10.5V. As mentioned, a bad connection could also lead to enough voltage drop to mimic a dead battery.

Another possibility is an issue with the starter motor brushes giving it a dead spot. Tapping the starter motor may jiggle it enough to make it work. If it's erratic as to when the problem is occurring, this could be the issue.
