have to use throttle to start it

i laid my bike over last week in my driveway. it was very hard to start afterwards, and i figured i just flooded it. well, now every time i cold start it i have to use the throttle. used to i could just use my choke and it would fire up, but not now, it just cranks until i use the throttle. what have i done?

possibly not related, but after i wrecked my bike the first time it took some effort to start (combo of cranking, choke, and throttle) but now it has a jet kit and yoshi exhaust. i always crack the throttle because i think it starts a little faster, maybe taking some stress off the starter.

how much throttle are you using? the way the bike works, if you have to add throttle (air) to start it then it's overly rich on startup. maybe you're using too much choke? if its hot out you won't need to use almost any choke.

Try starting it with no choke and at half throttle.

I could be wrong, but I don't think it's the choke cable. Same thing happened to me. I drained the tank and carbs and put in new gas. Also changed the plugs. Don't know which helped more, but now the bike runs smoother than it ever has.

A possible sequence of events: When the bike went over fuel sloshed into the pilot jet air bleed holes and other places it wasn't supposed to go. Because those holes are very, very tiny the surface tension of the gasoline was higher than cranking air flow could overcome, meaning that the mixture was way, way rich or lean. This resulted in an incombustible air/fuel mixture that fouled the plugs. Once the fuel evaporated out of all the orifices and the air/fuel mixture was back to normal the engine won't start or run as well because of the carbon deposits on the plugs.

That happened to me on my '06 last year. It took a couple of hundred miles before the carbon got burned off the plugs well enough to restore the performance back to normal.
