Bike Upgrade, what would you get?
If you were to go out and get a bike right now, maybe only spending 2-4k more than you think you would, what would you get?
As much as I'd hate to say it, the new R1's are looking mighty nice to me right now. My top three are: R1 ZX10 CBR1000RR in Repsol wrapping There is no point getting a 600 when the 1000's are just a grand or two more. Might as well as get the 1000.

if you're talking NEW, then idk where you can get a 1000 for 2-4k here in CA.
but leaving that part out, I'm sure I'd go with a 600cc like the Daytona 675 or ZX-6R new more practical to me for power and weight, as well as commuting. |

If I will upgrade I'd get a 600cc just because a 1000cc would kill me when it comes to insurance. But I think I would stay loyal to kawasaki and get the ZX10 I find it looks better than the other two.

But in all reality...if I was to get a new bike right now...with only a year of driving experience and for what I use my bike for... I would either get a 650r or the ER-6n. I know being a 21 year old who loves speed a 600 seems more typical. Yet most of my riding in southern florida is on boringgg roads. When I do get some twisties I think the 650r would still be plenty sporty and it still has a lot of guts and is more comfortable to ride. Or maybe a Aprila |

If money was no object (which wasn't part of your question), I'd go 2009 Daytona 675.
But for the price range, I think I'd go with a CBR 600 F4i. I dig these as well:

I have to say, I really like the look of the '09 SE R6 (that's the orange one). I've also been considering getting a green ZX6R for my next bike. Whatever it ends up being, it'll be either green or orange, as those are the two fastest colors behind BLUE!

Mmm... not really. Many people have commented that certain liter bikes are more "street-able" than 600's due to higher low-end torque / a more usable torque band.

this is assuming that i had the skill, which i don't, but bikes i have thought of are:
harley dyna street bob honda vfr 800 interceptor (or the soon-to-be released rumored replacement honda vfr 1000) both because they would be more comfortable for my wife to ride as a passenger. and the bike that made me get my license (but later found out my legs are too short to reach the controls) harley v-rod muscle |

I don't think of it as an "upgrade," but I'd eventually like to get a Triumph Street Triple because that bike is just hot as hell. And it looks a bit fun.
Some form of motard would be rad, too. A DR-Z400 SM, KTM SMC, or even a Duke. And then maybe something for long freeway hauls, though I haven't found a favorite to cling to in that category. I'd really like one of everything. But I'm pretty sure a Street Triple is next to be added to my garage. In some years when I have a garage.

To choose another bike is very much a personal thing and it’s easy to make a mistake if you have not had the chance to try one out. I was lucky enough to go to the Kawasaki test day not because I was going to buy anything just for the interest. The Ninja 600 and 1000cc are awesome but with one (for me anyway) big disadvantage is that because of the riding position a lot of weight is put on the wrists and shoulders, at commuting speeds this becomes painful, you need 70mph + for the wind to lift your body enough to reduce the load and make for a comfortable ride. The ER 6 N and ER 6 F give a riding position similar to the 250R and would make comfortable commuting machines, you do have to try otherwise your dream machine may become a nightmare.

I just went through this scenario. My younger son, TJ, got the 250 last spring. He rode it for a few months and then sold it. He then rode my 750 from last summer until last month. He is now riding a GSXR 1000 and loves it.
Althought he is only 16 he has been riding for 13 years. I have to add that he can only ride it while I am riding with him (on my 750). The bike is wonderful and handles like a dream. Yes it has a bit more power than he needs however, you don't have to use that power while riding on the street. Once I feel more comfortable with him understanding it is a deadly weapon I will let him go out on his own. He really wants a 600 but I think the 1000 will make him respect the power of todays bikes more. Then he can move down to a 600 and ride the wheels off it (at the track).

After going through the news threads I have to change my mind on upgrading to a bigger bike.
Since most riders here are new to the riding community I think you should keep your 250 until 2015. By then you will have gone through all your crashes and learning curve and be ready for one of the coolest bikes I've seen since the 82 Katana. http://www.visordown.com/news/article.asp?UAN=6854&v=1 I'm not sure if it is a bike or a giant squirt gun but it is wicked kool!

Oh God, I loved the look of that '82 Katana. They didn't keep that look for too long. Why did they decide to ditch that great styling and go back to the "vanilla" look? The more recent ones look like some cheap-ass Honda Hurricane.

I still ride the original Interceptor. It's 26 years old and runs strong. I haven't really been riding if for 26 years (I rode it in 83 and 84, put it away until 2 years ago, now I love riding it).
As far as the new ones, a good friend of mine has one and loves it. They are a little goofy looking in my opinion but she thinks it is beautiful.

My friend has had both an R1 and an R6 (both 2009) our for a spin this year and he said he was really dissapointed with the R1 and wouldn't waist the extra $$$. he said it felt slugish vs the R6 and he would much rather use the saved $$$ for exhaust and such.

The interceptor does intrigue me too, although according to the spec sheets looks significantly heavier than others in it's class. Since the whole of my experience is on the 250r, that is an intimidation factor for me right now.

I have to tell you that for the first time in a very long time, I don't have a good answer to this basic question. I've always had a few future bikes in my head no matter what I owned at the time, pretty much up until the past year or two. But lately, I can't really list any that I still lust after. I guess that's confirmation that I'm officially old and boring.
Our RT is probably the nicest do-everything bike we could want, able to handle 2-up with luggage easily, fast and sporty enough for 1-up twisty-road fun, plenty of comfort, and all the gadgets we could want. There isn't a bike in the class that I'd want to replace it with, and if a meteor took out the garage and wiped the RT off the planet, I'd likely replace it with an identical machine. I enjoy our 10R as well. It's teething issues have been worked out on my bike, with upgraded suspension and brakes now working well with that monster motor. Fun on the track, and still amusing on the street, but it does endanger the driver's license. Yes, the very latest literbikes make a handful more hp and perhaps handle a bit better out of the box, but none of them would allow me to ride any quicker on the street or track, or have more fun, so again I can't see replacing it any time soon. It serves its purpose. Last but certainly not least, our ninjette is a simply great machine. Great fun in just about all conditions, asks for nothing, and returns smiles all day. Cheap to buy, cheap to run, and cheap to maintain. And it's a great bike for Annie to take out every once in awhile if she ever feels the need. So I dunno. Though a new bike isn't in our immediate (or even medium-term) future, I'd guess it would be something that's completely different from the above to add to the garage, maybe a dual-sport or a pure dirt machine. We've got only a few years before I hope the little one can start to join us in this hobby, and dirt will almost definitely be the way to go at that point.

Speed won't get me in trouble, I view it as another out. The 250 is my second bike, the smallest I've ever owned. I'd love to track it, but I need more power on the street. Right now my only defenses are agility and braking. I'd love to add acceleration to that list. That is why I'm thinking 1000. I won't push it as hard, and it will still get up and boggie when I need it to.

I believe that my next bike will be a 600 Supersport. Sure the 1000s are not that much more, but the 600s get better fuel economy and are lighter. Anyway, I am not sure I trust myself with a 1000 yet I am bad enough going WOT on the ninja when acellerating as it is

The 600 SS bikes don't get significantly better fuel economy than the 1000 SS bikes. There is more variation between individual bikes than there are between the two classes of bikes. Cane the heck out of 'em on the street? Mid-30's mpg for either. Cruise in top gear at 70 mph? 45ish mpg for either. The weight difference isn't that significant either, with the 1000's no more than 20 lb's heavier than the 600 from the same manufacturer. But, there is a significant difference in turn-in effort on the 1000's due to a much heavier crankshaft. A crankshaft built to handle 180 hp needs to be much larger and heavier than one built to handle 120 hp, and that is a huge gyro difference between the two types of bikes. On the street it isn't as noticeable since you're not trying to turn forcefully while the engines are way up in the rev range, but on track it's very noticeable.
