Leesburg Bikefest

Got back from the Leesburg bikefest. I'd have to say that this would be a really great place to live considering how friendly they are to bikers there. There were numerous signs along the way "We {heart} bikers" and "Bikers welcome" to name a few. One thing that really impressed me is that the traffic lights all seem to work properly. I pulled up to lights with nobody else around and after waiting a few seconds, the light turns green. IT actually took me a few seconds to realize that this was actually happening.

During the two day event, certain streets in downtown Leesburg are blocked off to everyone except bikers. There is a lot of stuff going on there.

Now the bad part. Although its open to all bikers, its predominantly a cruiser/Harley event. I did manage to spot a few sport bikers there, but we were definitely in the minority.

Now the really bad part. I stayed at the ABATE campgrounds. Despite the fact that I'm a member, I have to say that the campgrounds were poorly organized and managed. First off, I've camped at other campgrounds and they always charge per campsite and not per person. At these campgrounds, they charged $13 per person and you were on your own to find a spot - no reservations allowed. The result is that people were crammed in like sardines. But more importantly, they needed to enforce a quiet time after 10pm like most other campground do. The result was that I was kept up all night long listening to people talking really loud and yelling about all sorts of things. I even had a naked drunk chick take a leak standing up just a few feet from my tent. I thought girls had a rule about doing that standing up, but apparently not that one. It was far too hot to just sleep late into the morning to make up for it. So basically, my only choice was to ride back home and sleep there.

The net result is that I missed most of the actual bikefest.

But it wasn't a total loss. I really only went for the ride and not for the bikefest so it worked out. I live in Palm Beach and Leesburg is about 200 miles away. Its about a 3-4hr ride depending on how you go.

But if I ever go back there again, I am going to stay in a motel or something.

This is not saying anything bad about the Leesburg bikefest. Its basically a three day version of the Daytona Bike Week.

Without the beach, the racetrack, and the spring breakers.

Well, I'm not that familiar with the terrain, but there are a lot of big lakes there so they probably have several "beaches" - just not any on the ocean. There is also a fairly good sized race track down the street in Sebring. But I can't say I saw any spring breakers. I got all goose bumpy every time I saw another sport biker because we were so rare. Not only that, but they were the only ones that would waive at me when I passed. Its kinda like segregation when it comes to waiving at other bikers. Cruisers only waive at other cruisers.
