Kenan Sofuoglu made his intentions clear of recapturing the World Supersport title on the first day of testing at Phillip Island, dominating the timesheets and ending nearly four tenths ahead of Pata Honda's Michael van der Mark. Sofuoglu set the time with ease, he later told Speedweek, saying he had been pushing at all, but had been working on tire endurance.

Van der Mark was the only rider to get anywhere near Sofuoglu, the Dutch youngster four tenths behind the Kawasaki man, but the same amount ahead of Vladimir Leonov on the MV Agusta 675. Irishman Jack Kennedy ended a few hundredths behind Leonov, and a mere few thousandths ahead of Fabio Menghi, Menghi being one of a host of Yamahas which still populate the World Supersport grid. Kennedy crashed toward the end of the afternoon session, and was taken to hospital for X-rays on his ankle.
