Is the ninja 250 capable of long ride 2hrs and up?

Is it fine to take a long ride with ninja 250? I have 250 2011. I havent done a long ride, thinking that it will hurt the engine if i ride it 2hrs 70mph or 120kph . Any guys there did a long ride close to that speed? And what mpg dod you guys get if your running 70mph steady.

Don't worry about it. Took mine for a 4 hours trip all highway about a month ago. Your butt will get soar before. I was doing 100-110 kmh all the time but I was taking a small break every hour or so.

Just think about people riding the Ninja at the track. Or races. Motor running 10,000rpm non stop the entire time.

@NevadaWolf has gone much longer than that. Depending on your own personal comfort needs, it's easily fine on a stock setup.

I have +1 gearing in the front, and I get about 61ish MPG on the highway. I've gotten a little fat, and I haven't done much highway since, so it's probably less.

I've done that plenty. It'll be fine. Don't remember the mpg but it was still good so I wouldn't worry about it.

I mount a 25lb Mtb and 70 lbs of camping gear to the back and ride up to 1200 miles in a day to races half way across the country. The wind drag from the Mtb and gear make it hard for the little motor to do the 75mph speed limit if the wind is against me. I basically ride for up to 17 hours strait wide open throttle between 65-90 mph several times a year and I've got 87,000 miles on my 2009 so far with zero motor issues. If your going to ride high rpms for hours at a time check your oil level at each gas stop till you get a feel for any oil burning issues. If your bike is going to burn oil then that's when it'll happen. My bike burns so little oil even now I just set it at the upper level when I change it and it'll be about mid sight glass by my next oil change.

I've run mine in numerous 1.5-3hr endurance races and have run on a 250 that ran in 2 2hr endurance races followed by a 5hr endurance race

I've also put in 1,000mi days on both my 250 and 300

You're good so long as the bike is properly maintained (no different than if you were riding sprints)

I used to travel daily around 2 hours ride to work. No problem with the engine. My average speed was around 120km/h to 160 km/h. It is a good bike indeed.

@Abu_Mishary that looks like a really fun commute, I would imagine that if you weren't on a bike it would be very draining to commute 3 hours each day. Even with the apparent forest and mountain scenery

My own personal best for a long ride within a 24 hour period is 23 hours, 48 minutes maintaining a speed between 65-75 MPH (which is around 8000 rpm I think? I have a 15t sprocket up front) and I made 12 gas stops between the start and finish with an average MPG of 36.29. I'm heavy to start with, add gear and water bags, plus a headwind, and yeah my mileage tanks above 70mph.

Bike doesn't mind it at all. Just keep up on your maintenance and it'll keep chugging along.

Hi Ben.. yup it's fun on the weekdays. But on the weekends I am stuck at home too tired to ride with my buddies...

That's a shame about the weekends, I have had similar issues as my work tends to continue into the weekends so I know how sad it is to not get to ride with all your buddies as much as you would like

Used to be a backpack until my back finally cried Uncle after two years. Now I strap a small backpack onto each side of the front fairing and carry two 2-liter bladders of water up there. Not very aerodynamic but I have water for most of my rides.

I spend atleast 2hrs daily on commute to work and back. Never below 60mph usually close to 80mph and around 10-12k rpms. Haven't 2up'd yet but bike runs strong. I'm a light rider 140lbs. I was worried when 1st bought the bike running those rpms for an hour straight. After spending many hours on this website I no longer worry about the trips. Just check to make sure oil level is good before each ride!

I had just taken a trip from NYC to the Boston area to visit a friend and to explore the MA roads. ~200 mile trip with no problems at all going ~80mph on the highways. The bike held up great but man was I freezing from the early morning chilly air.

Side note - on the trip back I had noticed my engine oil pressure light up sparsely and for only a few seconds. Would long rides at higher RPM change viscosity of the oil causing the sensor to light up? Last oil change I had done was 1500 miles ago.

If your idiot light is lighting up I'd check your oil level. If anything you may have a leak. It's not that riding the bike at high RPM has changed the viscosity of your oil.

You're in luck. I live less than two hours from you, in Connecticut.

You'll make it to my place before the bike blows up. I'll take it off your hands so you don't have to worry about disposal. I'll even give you train fare home and a ride to the station....

Absolutely. This bike is right at home running at 10k rpm for hours on end. My longest ride so far has been around 6 hours straight, with only a couple 5min breaks. The seat could definitely use some improvement, but the bike didn't miss a beat even once the whole time. A quality built machine for sure.

The Ninja will lose some oil into the airbox from extended high RPM running when hot. It's not drastic, but it does add up. Best to check the level carefully (using the proper technique - http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/How_do_I_check_my_oil%3F) before heading out.

A breakdown of your oil, and loss of oil pressure, would be odd and unusual for the Ninja or any other water-cooled engine unless there was a cooling system problem. I would check the coolant level and condition just to be safe. Running a synthetic oil like Rotella T6 is good insurance against oil-related problems, but most conventional oils that are designed or rated for cycle use should be adequate.

If you still see the light flicker after you confirm that the oil level, coolant level, and type of oil are correct, I would look into it further. At idle it isn't as critical as it is during normal riding, but it shouldn't be coming on any time the engine is running.
