Motorcyclist Saved from Burning Car

In critical condition. Doesn't look like he was wearing a helmet... or any other gear. No word on if the driver is doing to be punished for being an idiot.

Does not look promising. Seems to have been wearing no gear at all.

ATGATT - its a no brainer!

Common sense is not common anymore. Please keep in mind that a motorcycle demands a lot of respect from the operator. It gives us alot of pleasure but if mishandled, things could go wrong fast & deadly.

I am a cager & your brother in rides - Ironglory. IMHO.

Holy crap!

Look at this scene from Logan, Utah.

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/444998...-today_people/

Quote:
According to a report from KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City, Wright was riding his motorcycle on U.S. Highway 89 near the Utah State University campus Monday morning when a black BMW pulled out of a parking lot in front of him. Wright intentionally grounded his cycle to avoid getting hit — but his bike went up in flames and he slid underneath the auto, which was also on fire.
My bet is that the BMW driver will claim that the motorcyclist "came out of nowhere"

I saw the video on national news last night; props to those people who actually care enough to help instead of sit around and watch like the crash that happened in NY...

According to a CNN story the rider is now in stable condition.

He's lucky to be alive.

Wow. Good to see they were able to get him out.

The article says motorcycle, but it looks more like a scooter to me. Note the rear swingarm, lack of noticeable motor, exhaust pipe and skinny tires. Also looks like a step thru frame. It's burning way too fast for any substantial amount of metal to be present.

Just my 2 cents.

"Wright intentionally grounded his cycle to avoid getting hit"

I can't think of a time where intentionally low siding your bike is safer than stopping or swerving.

I'm not really sure how to intentionally low side my bike. I suppose you just keep on the gas and lock the handle bars in one direction?

I suppose slam on the rear brake and fall over. But I think controlled braking and then a last second swerve would be a much better idea. At least get your speed as low as possible before crashing

It seems to be a common myth out there that you should lowside when a car pulls in front of you. Its never a good idea to do anything that could put you under the wheels of a car.

Note the similarities with the poor kid in New York. The difference is that the bystanders in this case acted and got the kid out from under the car. Unlike the kid in New York where the bystanders just gawked while the biker suffocated from the weight of the vehicle.

Sorry this guy was messed up. Beamers are like that. Glad to hear he's going to be OK. Hope he wears a helmet next time he rides.

They had a segment on Inside Edition this evening about it. They interviewed several of the heroes and read a statement that the biker put on his facebook page thanking them. He's still in critical condition but expected to make a full recovery.

According to the MSNBC link he had scrapes all over his body and a burn on his foot. $20 says most, if not all, of that could've been prevented by even minimal gear.

"He didn't bother putting on his helmet for the three to four mile journey, because he was in a hurry."

Not even going to point out how ridiculous that is.

In most cases, a helmet is beneficial. However, in this exact case, I think it would have complicated getting him out and because of its size, may have caused his neck to get wrenched as he rolled under the car.

But as far as the rest of the gear, it would have helped a lot with the road rash. I doubt gear would have prevented multiple leg fractures though.
