Downsides to missing title/bonded title?

I've tried searching the net and the forums and don't see any really good resources to describe the process to legally own a vehicle that is missing the title. Or vehicles with bonded titles.

Could someone explain the basics of whatever process is needed to be street legal when purchasing a bike without a title? It looks like the process to get a bonded title takes like 6 weeks. Does that mean you can't ride it or insure it till then?

Assume the bike isn't stolen and the vin has been checked. Thanks.

It varies widely from state to state. In some states it's a piece of cake, in others it's a much more involved process. I don't know anything about how Texas handles it, but you need to get some Texas-specific info for it to be useful.
