When it melts off, if you want to try again with high temp paint, I think it would look better to leave both tips chrome and just paint the inside section.

Plasti Dip? Bad idea! Use a hi-temp paint, like some header paint. Keep in mind, chrome is hard to paint, it will likely scrape off fairly easily.

VHT Barrel Spray Paint Gloss Black (SP905) and Satin Black (SP906) is custom formulated to restore motorcycle engines to their original factory appearance. It is extremely resistant to oil, petrol and solvents, and is heat resistant to 550ºF (287ºC). It virtually stops rust and corrosion while resisting chipping, cracking and fading.

or

VHT FlameProof Coating will renew and extend the life of any surface exposed to extremely high temperatures. This unique coating is a matte finish, ceramic base silicone widely used by the automotive industry on exhaust systems and the aerospace industry for jet engines, re-entry vehicles, the Stealth fighter, B-2 bomber and other high temperature applications.

VHT FlameProof Coating will withstand temperatures up to 1500ºF (815ºC) and is ideal for use on boilers, hot water pipes, exhaust systems, franklin stoves, heaters, barbecues, furnaces or wherever an extreme temperature coating is needed (* indicates colours that may fade at 1200ºF/648ºC). VHT Flameproof Coating only attains its unique properties after correct curing (refer to the instructions on the can).

Yeah thanks Justin. I have been reading up on paints to use. Supposedly VHT has a an exhaust paint that is good up to 2,000 degrees. Now I just need to call around to see if I can find it...

Yep, works great. No need to prime. Just scrub the exhuast with some fine sandpaper, wipe down with some degreasing soap, and spray away. Gives a nice matte black finish and i can actually touch it after a ride without getting immediatly burned. Its good up to 1500 degrees, fairly durable, and is readily available anywhere.

Plasti Dip is good up to 312°F. I have seen people plasti dipping their car exhaust tips and so far its held up well for 6 months... never really heard of a melting story.

For the muffler. High temp paint to 500F is recommended. For the headers 1200F is recommended.

To the last two posts.... Plasti-Dipping exhaust tips is probably alright because tips don't get as hot as the rest of the pipe, so that's probably why his muffler is ok. If you try to dip exhaust pipes or headers, you'd probably be in trouble.

Glad to see it's worked out! I've still got a bunch of dip sitting around and I don't like the polished mufflers on the pregen. I might dip and see if it holds up. If it doesn't, maybe time for a new exhaust Win-win

I had the Leo stainless steel full system and it just stood out to much so I did this.

This is flat black powder coat with the $60 HF system. I have a much nicer pro level gun be shipped next week and when it arrives I'll be re-coating the can a slightly glossier flat, the stainless mounting strap as well as the two riveted straps that hold the can together will be a semi gloss gunmetal, and I debating on wether to leave the rivets black or orange to match my rotors.

Powder coat on the header has about 700 miles and shows zero change in color

wuuut? do you not ride for long periods of time? Most powder cures at about 400 degrees. 400 or ever is like rebaking it everytime. I would imagine the header gets hotter than that. If its black maybe thats why the color hasnt changed but I wonder if the properties of it changed. If over baked it will get brittle....

To the best of my knowledge these little 250 motors don't put out as much heat as say an R-1 so the exhaust runs cooler. My commute is only 30mins but I have at least 1000mile since I coated it and during that time I did two 250 mile canyon rides. I know the headers where they connect to the engine get hotter then the rest of the pipe so its most likely to change first if at all. I just got in a high temp powder designed to withstand 1000degs and cures at 450, this is what I'll be using on the headers.

The can dosent get nearly as hot as the headers so normal temp powder should work just fine.

Also some paints even though they cure at a set temperature will be able to withstand twice as much after they cool and completly cure. The heat acts as an activator to combine the chemicals that when combined can take the heat.

Yeah I know the can you can do with a normal coating.

but ok using a high temp powder I imagine would work. Ive never used that before. I should look into getting some I guess. I am only allowed to get good stuff if I use our 5k powder coating machine.. lol
