How do I get the key lock code for my 2009?

I purchased a 2009 Ninja 250 a couple of weeks ago from a dealer. They only had a single key and did not have the owners manual, etc. Does anyone know if the key code is on the seat lock? If it is, does anyone have instructions on safe removal?

Aloha welcome to the forum. Did you buy it new or used? If it is a new bike then the Dealer should have given you 2 keys and and owners manual. Not sure about the key code. I'm sure someone else on here will chime in a few. Lots of knowledgeable riders on here. Good luck.

If you look on your steering column right by the key slot there will be a 4-digit code. That's your key code.

Here's a link to another thread on the issue, with a picture.

Blanks are ~$10 OEM direct

As I mention in the linked thread, I live reasonably close to Hillbilly Cycle Sales, a shop that says they can cut a new key with the code. If you need a local liason, let me know.

That picture was perfect...walked right out into the garage and got the code!

I could use some help finding someone locally. I have phoned a number of local dealers and was pretty much told that they don't even have blanks for a 2009! I was thinking about ordering one online with and giving them the code to cut it. Do you have any recommendations?

I live in the Columbus, Ohio area...

I see that this board is full of local liasons there. Not only do I have family in Princeton, WV (where I bought mine), Noche_Calliente is there too.

Unfortunately my experience with keys has been drastically easier. I got both keys with my bike, one completely unused, so I just ordered an OEM blank and had a local hardware/key shop cut me a copy. Honestly I haven't looked for other Kawai dealers that will cut to codes.

Supposedly the hang-up is the directory that cross-references the key code to the actual key pattern, and lazy dealers. Might just be worth your time to order an OEM key and send it to Hillbilly (or order it through them). Their number is 304-425-4321, open tuesday-saturday til ~6pm EST.

You can order a blank from a dealer and then take it to a hardware store with your original and they will make a copy. The key code is engraved on your ignition switch. Give the dealer the key code and he will order the blanks. The rest is as easy as duplicating a house key.

Obviously, a copy of a key is only as good as the original key. If the old key has seen enough use, the copy may not work. In lieu of other options though, this will likely work just fine. And you can order the blank online from an OEM parts distributor as well, without having to provide your key code.

I am the one that started the other thread. I ended up calling hillbilly cycle. My local dealer wasn't much help. Hillbilly was awsome to deal with. I had the key shipped to me within 10 days and that was getting it shipped to Canada.

Do you not know how to read? Steering column. Take a flashlight. Open your eyes. Look.
