Western Kentucky Transplant

A little about myself...

Lived in WI most of my life, have been in love with motorcycles since I was probably 5 and the parents were not fond of them. Ended up taking the MSF course and getting my license. My parents are like, "how about we buy you a car instead of you getting a motorcycle?" I said as long as I could ride on the track. Ended up being cheap and getting a beat to hell 1990 Miata that I loved and buy a CBR600rr track bike in 08 when I graduated from college. Never rode the bike, but let my friends track it if they wanted to. Gave the Miata to my dad, he was the one that bought anyways, when I moved to San Diego six years ago.
I recently moved to Western Kentucky for my wife's job and became a stay at home dad. I finally, in May of '17, got the 600rr for my first track day at Barber. Ended up meeting a friend there that I hadn't seen in 14 years from my WI days.
A friend in the smaller town I live in now is moving and asked me if I was interested in a motorcycle. 2003 Ninja 250. Asked how much and it was LOW in price. It hasn't ran in almost 10 years. I am currently waiting for a battery before I dig in to see how bad the fuel system is. I was told that the PO tried to get it running with a buddy years ago, but couldn't and described like the paint was coming off of the inside of the tank. I probably have a nightmare ahead of me, but who knows really. Hopefully I can get it running and get people to go to track days with me since I will have a second bike.

Just wanted to say Hi! Will mostly lurk and search for info, but mostly wanted to say hi

Welcome!

We've been through the "rehab a bike that hasn't run in years" thing a bit ago. Get a qualified person (ducatiman here is good) to clean your carbs, and maybe replace your fuel lines. That's what we had to do. Lots of threads here about rehabbing them, too.

Stripped bike down to get to the carbs. Man o man, is the tank and petcock screwed. I will see what Evapo-rust will do to the inside of the tank, but I am not not sure if it can be saved. This is what I could shake out.

I ordered a new petcock for how much of the aluminum was eaten away from the original. Good thing was that my local Kawasaki dealer price matched the cheapest parts I could find online! Would you remove the two filters on the petcock and then run a paper filter after it or run the petcock filters AND the paper filter?

More bad news was that I was cleaning the carb and snapped the top off of a jet in the carb and couldn't get the other one out. So I contacted ducatiman and he sent a cleaned, red painted, and refreshed set of carbs. Not a fan of the red, but it was cheaper than sending my carbs out to him to get fixed from the stuck and broken jets, and now I have spare parts!

I am just waiting on the tank to clean up, adjust my valves, lube the cam with oil as I do this, and give it an oil change before I attempted to start it up.

Got it running a week ago for 30 seconds and then it died. I poured gas down the carb and used a bottle with the fuel hose in it to supply gas. Later on in the week I realized that this bike doesn't have a fuel pump and starved itself of gas. I finally got the tank cleaned up, put some gas in it and it started right up.

A week after getting it started, I finally found some time to actually ride it. The rear shock is blown. It goes down and then doesn't come back up. Anyone have a newgen, not blown rear shock laying around that they would like to donate?

Trying to get a friend in town to do a track day with me and this would be their bike to ride. I would want to upgrade the front brake line with braided, flush the brakes, and get some new rubber before I let someone else ride it.
