My Grand California Tour

So I spent some time making this up as a potential 'dream trip' if I get the vacation time and want to hate myself afterwards. It started as a road trip idea for this upcoming June but I don't think I'll have the type of time required for the route. Still, thought I might post it and see what thoughts were -- if anyone has any route modification ideas I'd love to hear them.
The concept:
A 'tour of California's best twisties', in loop form, containing these points:
a.) Disney
b.) The Rock Store
c.) Corbin HQ
d.) China Town San Fran
e.) Mt Hamilton

I've attempted to minimize going back over the same roads, but there are a few points I couldn't find a better route. I also apologize that the route takes up several links -- google has limits on route complexity.

http://goo.gl/maps/JD6Gf <- Disney to Palm Springs
http://goo.gl/maps/Bw3v4 <- Palm Springs through to the Rock Store
http://goo.gl/maps/5nrRd <- Rock Store to Corbin
http://goo.gl/maps/q0VCU <- Corbin to China Town
http://goo.gl/maps/RDplG <- China Town to Mt Hamilton
http://goo.gl/WBIE3 <- Mt Hamilton to Disney or http://goo.gl/OotCi <- Mt Hamilton to Disney, Long Route

You should definitely check out Yosemite, Lee Vining (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Vining,_California), (from this area you can visit Bodie, a ghost town - http://bodie.com/), Mono Lake, Hwy 1 (Coastal Route), possibly Sequoia/Kings National Parks, if you are into that type of stuff. California is huge, there is so much to see in this state and nice places to ride.

^yes to this

I want to do something very similar focusing on exploring SoCal and the sierras. I have the storage capacity to bike camp the whole thing but I won't do it solo(no fun) and I don't know who would want to go with me.

originally this was for the trip I'm doing with Momaru but he's only in town for 2 weeks and in the middle of that we're doing a track day so sadly I'm not sure we could fit this in, as fun as it could be.

^Yes. Doubly seconded. Some stretches of the Pacific Coast Highway are amazing and twisty. Don't ask me about double-apexes and my FR days. (That was another life.)

I was planning a trip like this too with some friends, but then a lot of them bailed, because they don't want to do it on two wheels. It sounds awesome though. If I find the right group of people, and can get the time off, I would be so game.

PCH was on my list but it looked like it was better twisties going more inland, so it got culled out. If you guys vouch though I could definitely try for that instead, at least one way. Maybe swap Mt Hamilton and China Town and take PCH back as an alternate short return; make the Yosemite trip another time?

Thanks for the suggestion Alex -- looks like great fun, but it's way farther south than my existing route and squeezing it in would be hard. I may have to break it into 3 sections - a no cal loop, mid cal loop, and so cal loop; then I could hit up places like this without requiring 3 months of riding to get through it all

Hwy 33 just north of Mira monte is epic fun with zero traffic. I hit it 4 times going to and from SoCal to NorCal and I think I've seen like two cars and one bike in ether direction. I look for reasons to need to go to LA just to hit that road

Hwy 1 is fun but there's always so much traffic you ether go 20mph or constantly passing over the double yellow. When I ride hwy 1 I try to do it during the summer at like 6am right when the sun rises because no ones away yet

Well, if you ever make it to Chinatown, you may be interested in Japantown as well (though a little less known by most people and not as big as Chinatown). I think breaking up Cali like you mentioned sounds like a good idea, considering the potential rides one could do and factoring in time restraints.

Nice revision of the route. A few things I might alter with it (there are some canyon roads near the coast I thought looked gorgeous while your route puts us straight down 1) but you may be on to something -- maybe do the southern route down to Palm et al another time.

Just something I through together in 30seconds. When I do it ill scan the route in more detail for other options along the way but hwy 1 is pretty good most the way during light traffic hours. It the section up to mono lake that looks boring.

I highly recommend stopping for lunch in Gilroy at Garlic World. It's literally on the side of 101-N not far from the highway junction coming from the Corbin factory. You can't miss the giant Garlic World sign. The bbq stand there is surprisingly good and not too expensive (this is of course assuming you enjoy bbq/meat/garlic)

Hold on, let me go full southern accent. Everyone got that voice in their head? good.

Girl, I grew up in Virginia and Texas. BBQ runs deep in these veins.

LA will be our 'base of operations' for the trip, so I cut everything in LA and south of LA out so that we can do it after our track day

I am not sure if you're interested or aware, but since you're going through Hwy 41, there are some twisties off the beaten path of Hwy 41. Namely, "Little Dragon," which is near Hwy 49 between Mariposa and Coulterville, Powerhouse Road aka Auberry Road (between the cities of North Fork and Auberry), etc. You could also check out The Exact Geological Center of California, located in North Fork, then head up to Bass Lake (which is about 9 miles away) and depending on what month your riding (these restaurants are closed during the winter), eat at the lake (Millers Landing, The Forks), then head up to Yosemite or down into Fresno (whichever way you're going).

Here's a glimpse of the roads I am speaking of:

"Little Dragon"

Link to original page on YouTube.

Powerhouse Road aka Auberry Road

Link to original page on YouTube.

There are a lot of nice areas and local hidden gems around the Central Valley/San Joaquin Valley of Cali, depending on your interests. Anyways, feel free to ask any questions around this area specifically, if need be.

Trip will be end of May/start of June so the dining is definitely in Those look like great routes, I'll try to pull them up onto Google Maps. The big thing will be how tired we are -- our starting point is LA, up to San Fran, then across to Yosemite and back down to LA. From the sounds this would be on the way out of Yosemite, so we might be pretty saddle sore. If we aren't... these could be in the running

Wahhhh Momaru is coming for a visit to my coast!? I haven't seen him for AGES!

I wouldn't mind meeting up and hanging out for a few if you guys are trying to work that out too. Not sure where I will be around June (or when ever) but certainly wouldn't mind joining you for a small leg

Here's what you do: find your best friend from high school who now lives on the opposite coast and also rides a 250. Go completely nuts over how much you miss each other, get plane tickets, have their bike shipped out to you, take your ride, then have their bike shipped back.

... Not that I'd know anything about that.

Or if Yakaru's solution doesn't work for you... Find another ninjette member in your area that would like to do the same thing. It might take a while but it could happen...

Or meet Ninjette folks, other motorcycle people, along the way. I know a few people who have done that.

Good luck!

Ill be heading all the way down to San Diego next weekend and I'll looking for as many twists and turns as I can find along the way. I won't have time and its to cold to head back through Yosemite on this trip but there's always next time

Might even sail out to the Channel Islands if there's time.

Momaru is writing up the report I was working on a draft with him before he left earlier today. Be forewarned, it's a doozy of a tl;dr. I'll be trying to break it up to make the interesting bits easy to find, but the whole story is hilariously complicated. I believe the first section is called something along the lines of "things that went wrong before the trip even started" :P

You could post a section every day to break it up a bit too.

Ha, sounds about right before any major trip as well as the story of my life. I can't wait for the write up.
