OK - I just realized that the htaccess doesn't seem to be working well at all, that could fix all of this. It should be standardizing whether people are seeing ninjette.org or www.ninjette.org, and it's not; so the cookies are failing as it hops between them. This is fixable tonight.

In the meantime, as long as you start at www.ninjette.org, you shouldn't have any issue. It's only if people start at ninjette.org, where the redirect error sometimes shows up on the portal.

Provisioned test VPS at the same host, so I can play to my hearts content on another instance. Can also now scp things back and forth between them at lightning speed, so if I do feel like rebuilding from scratch once I figure out every little nuance, it will happen that much faster.

It is on the exact same physical server, so it's not much of a disaster recovery solution, but I'll be taking off-site backups each week like before anyway. I have been really pleased with the service so far at the new host, we're using a company called RamNode, that has been getting some good press in the hosting arena lately.

htaccess has been fixed, so everyone coming to this site should always be seeing "www.ninjette.org" no matter how they initially get here. This should fix the cookie/login problems on the portal.

Firewall back up and running. Rebooted one more time, and restarted postfix. The host is working on the SSD drives, so we might be getting somewhat slower performance than optimal; may have to reboot tomorrow night.

Arg! Got test server up and running, and without doing anything special, postfix is successfully running on startup.

Once again I tried to uninstall it from this primary server, then reinstall it, with the startup scripts. But on reboot once again it wasn't started. Minor issue, but one that will bug me for awhile....

Alrighty! I couldn't get PostFix to work, but reenabled Sendmail, and now that is successfully sending mail after a reboot, with no interaction by me. It's still somewhat different from my test box, as PostFix should have worked, but now this is minor.

Doubled the size of our VPS instance, hopefully to give us more headroom & resources before they pull the plug on us again.

Will need to rebuild everything some upcoming weekend late at night, with what I've learned since this initial install.

Unfortunately, the rebuild couldn't wait. Fortunately, I completed it a few minutes ago.

Off to sleep.

There have been updates on the facebook page, but for those who haven't gone over there, I'll repost the gist of it here.

We're back on the same type of server that we were on over the weekend when we got booted off for too much cpu/disk utilization. The SSD server that I moved things to last night had another issue (unrelated to us), so the host moved everyone that they had moved to the new server, back to a SSD/Cached server. Everything seems to be running reasonably well here, but we won't be here permanently. Once the SSD-only server is stable again, we will move this VPS over to one of those, which should get us the most performance and least likelihood of overloading anything, at anywhere near our expected level of traffic. That next move shouldn't require any additional work by me, other than a resync/repair/optimize of the database tables once we're at the new server, but that's just a couple clicks.

Thanks for all of your patience while these teething pains work themselves out. While I don't like any of this downtime, the hosting company has been quite communicative and responsive throughout, and you can't really ask for much more than that at this very reasonable price point.

"As the server turns...."

I decided to try a completely different hosting provider this morning, and moved everything over to them. This was instead of rebuilding it yet again on the existing host, after it hadn't worked properly on the first 3 builds I had already done there. It felt like wasted work, so why not start fresh. This new host (gridvirt.com), offers higher capacity VPS plans, and in total it's only somewhat cheaper than the dedicated host we were using two hosts back, the one with performance problems that caused this thread to be opened up in the first place.

We are now on a KVM VPS architecture, running Centos 6.4 64-bit, with 10 CPU cores, 100 GB of SSD storage, with 8 GB of ram available. I've provisioned 2 VPS's using those resources, with the production taking 8 cores, 80 GB of storage, and 6 GB of ram. A test server will take the remainder.

So far it seems to be running well, though it's only been up for a day. I have noticed periodic spikes where the CPU load goes up quite high, but with the 8 cores it seems to handle it without a hitch, and knock it back down progressively until it's at baseline again. I'm hoping that this activity is well within what's expected for this size of VPS, so with any luck we won't be shut off unexpectedly as has happened several times over the last few days.

Ultimately, I guess I could consider a dedicated host again, but I really don't think this level of traffic needs it yet as long as a VPS can handle the occasional spikes. Please post up if you see anything weird performance wise (or anything-else-wise) on the new host.

We've been up on the new VPS at gridvirt.com for a week or so, and I'm quite happy with the performance so far. Page response time has sped up noticeably, and the servers seem to have no trouble keeping up with the occasional traffic spikes. Here's what google's webmaster tools is telling me about average page download time:

Lower is better, and you can see how the performance was progressively getting worse on our old host. Switching to Ramnode (which was fast, but spotty), and now Gridvirt (which seems fast and reliable), shows up clearly on the graph.

I keep getting an Apache/CentOS site construction page at ninjette.org and page not found at ninjette.org/index2 or whatever else. It's been happening pretty frequently, just notifying you to make sure you're aware. Hopefully it's just times you are working on the servers.

If you've seen them since last Tuesday, that would be a surprise to me. It's possible that the test pages are still in your browser cache; if you see them again hold the shift key down and hit the refresh button at the top of your browser. That should make sure that you're pulling the latest versions of everything from the server.

It has been sporadically throughout the last 3-4 days. It is replicable on different computers that have never been to Ninjette as well as my phone using 4G rather than Time Warner, and different browsers. I can take screenshots and do a -tracert next time it happens if it would help.

Yup - all of that would help, especially the tracert. If you're getting to a webserver at 108.61.51.56, and it's popping up a generic config page or another error, that's unexpected at this point. I haven't seen it once since bringing this up for the first time mid-day last Tuesday.

Ok I think it's a Time Warner issue? I can access the site from my 4G but if I turn on Wifi I can't connect until I turn it off and clear cookies. Here's a pic, sorry it's from my ancient laptop my daughter uses for games until my PSU for my main rig gets back from RMA.

The different connections will probably use different DNS settings, you could try change your DNS settings on your time warner to 8.8.8.8 alt: 8.8.4.4 which is google's public DNS server, I suspect that's the issue.

It looks like a local DNS issue on that PC to me as well. If the computer is resolving ninjette.org to 198.105.251.46, something funky is going on. It should flush on its own in time, but here's how to force it:

Also wouldn't hurt to just reboot the main router you have in your house, often that refreshes DNS without needing any additional commands. And - it will then positively affect your phone over wifi on that network as well.
