Avoid them, know your area and alternative routes during busy times.

I do it and will continue. But don't ride at night. You can't see and you can't be seen. Get off the road of you can.

4, 8, and 14 especially, but they forgot the biggest one: following distance. Remember, a car in traffic stops a lot faster if it rear-ends someone than if they just slam on their brakes, so increased following distance in heavy traffic is advisable. Happened to me a few months ago on my ride into the office and a combination of all four helped me avoid slamming into the back of the car in front of me after it had just done the same to the car in front of it!

Question on the "watch the driver" bit... How do you all see the driver? I can only see them if I'm right next to or less than a car length away from them, far to close to react to anything they do.

When I look at a driver window, I either see reflection, glare, or a somewhat opaque blueish window. I can't make out anything inside the vehicle.

I've taken to watching the front wheel. Based on if it remains still, starts rolling, or starts turning, I react from that.

^^^^ Likewise; I look at the front wheels, its the best indicator of what the driver is going to do.

I was a young driver and I remember telling my younger brother the exact same thing as we was learning to drive. Watch the front wheels. If it even starts to come your way, react.

By the way, awesome article, Hernan! I especially loved #14, More Than One Way Out.

It reminds me of the ongoing thread you started about the driver having to make a decision on who to run over.
