So the other day a guy brings his 2007 Kawasaki ninja ZX7R in complaining that it will not start. his story was that his tank bag fell of while riding and he ran over it with his back tire. The bag then spun around his tire and tore off his license plate/undertail kit. Once one of our techs got into it he found that if the batt was connected and the bike was turned on 2 of the fuel injectors were constantly spraying fuel into the engine. So now his engine is hydrolocked but we need to find out why his fuel injectors were stuck on... we figured it had to be an electrical issue. He eventually found the source of the problem.. After his license plate was ripped of he then let his brother in-law re mount it. his brother in-law then drilled 6 holes straight through his ECU! and 2 through the connector to the wiring harness!... His repairs were in the $3k range even without including any repairs needed for the hydrolocked engine...
I believe it ended with his brother in-law buying him a whole new motorcycle.

So please, do not just go drilling holes in your tail section to mount your license plate... It can cost you your bike.

Was the tank bag magnetic?
if so, that's another reason not to use magnetic tank bag on your ride.

I've all ways wondered about magnetic tank bags... You would think it would be bad for cell phones, gps, and photo equipment...

I thought the ZX7 was discontinued while it wasstil carb'd? The red wheel seems more like a ZX6 to me. But damn, 3k for the ECU? Guess I'll never "upgrade" with parts being that expensive. For 3k I could buy 2 old gen 250s.

I read the original thread over on an R1 forum, the bike was actually a 2007 zx6r, and the pricing work out to about $500 for ecu, about $500 for harness that was ruined too, internal work that needed to be done being that hydrolocking the enging caused the rods to bend, and then there were labor cost on top of all that. That guy that caused the damaged ended up buying the owner a used cbr1000rr instead of paying to repair it.

Actually, it probably happened because it WASN'T magnetic, if he's telling the truth at all (the "brother in law" bit sounds like he doesn't want to be called an idiot and so he is blaming someone else).

Even magnetic tank bags are supposed to be secured with a strap around the triple. I don't because I've never needed it, even when mine was WAY over-loaded. I've fit gallons of milk and multiple 2-liter bottles of soda with even more stuff strapped to the top and it's always held tight.

I've had my iPhone go nuts twice as soon as I draped mine next to my pocket but I can't seem to trigger it intentionally. Both times I was using a Bluetooth headset and heard screeching in my ear. I ride with a magnetic bag, unsecured by anything but the magnets, and have since 2005. I've used both the Icon Urban and the Joe Rocket Manta. Those magnets are strong enough there is NO way they fall off, even at high speed, unless you are trying to get them off. Even then, I sometimes have a heck of a time just getting it unstuck on purpose. IMHO, not a safety hazard at all.

They should probably make one side of the ECU enclosure aluminum so that no one will think they are looking at the same plastic on top as they are on bottom.

I take most of my motos off-pavement, magnetic tank bag simple won't stay put when the terrain gets a bit rough.

I was mistaken it was a zx6r(silver with red wheels). I work in the service department at a kawasaki dealership and the original post was from one of our techs on probetalk.com
