Help me choose my new jacket
Ok, it's getting cool and for too many reasons to list, I need to get a new jacket. I've decided on the Tourmaster Women's Transition II. The trouble I'm having is deciding on the color. Remember that Nightshade is black with lots of blue accents.
My two choices on the jacket have been narrowed down to silver or high-vis. I do want to be visible in it, but I'm not sure I'm ready to go for the high-vis just yet. If I were just trying to match, I'd go with the black, but I don't think it would be visible enough on the dreary winter days around here. Though there is the possibility that the black would absorb more heat from what little sun we get and help keep me warmer. So the question is - which would you buy if you were going to buy this jacket and what factors led you to this decision? I don't particularly need any info other than which color of this jacket. Thanks so much!!!! Ok, so pictures: and to show the reflectivity: this is the tan color in the dark And if you want more info, here's the WebBikeWorld review for the Men's and the NewEnough link for the women's. http://www.webbikeworld.com/r4/tourm...tion-2-jacket/ http://www.newenough.com/protective_...le_jacket.html

Well, you know how I'd vote, but if you can't handle the Hi Vis, go w/ the silver.

If you use your bike to commute, hi-vis all the way.
I actually bought two jackets when I got my gear, because they were only $79 (love those massive sales at NewEnough). Most of the time I spend on the bike is commuting. Not only is traffic dense, but people are sleepy, distracted, on autopilot, etc. I feel I really NEED to be seen, and based on how other drivers behave around me I do believe that the screaming yellow jacket makes a difference. But for recreation, I don't feel this is quite as much of a factor, so I also got a red one. I fully acknowledge that this is not entirely rational and is based partly on vanity, but there's another reason: Fluorescent dyes fade fast under UV exposure. I know full well that the hi-viz jacket won't last all that long (or, rather, the jacket will, but it will fade). So, using a red jacket some of the time will extend the life of the yellow one. Silver is a decent compromise, but you still can fade into the background. Black just makes you disappear. Like a ninja.... |

If it snows where you live then get the black one, dont get the silver because you'll blend in with the snow. If there is no snow fall then the silver one would be my pick.

If you're already sporting hi-vis flip flops, I'd say go with black... else I'd vote hi-vis then silver

Of course this is a purely objective recommendation since have no bias to one color over the other (: I'd go for the hi-vis then the silver. With that Transition you won't need any "heat absorption" from the black to stay warm and it will be harder to see. Picture up when you've made your decision.

I'm fairly impartial to that Hi-viz jacket too. Can't really go wrong, though

Well, the verdict is in After spending much time on adventure riders reading many different reviews of the jacket, I decided to go with the High-Vis. Thanks for all of the input!

that was the concern, but considering I walk right through the occupied building swishing away in my gear, low profile isn't really possible anyway

Great choice on the color Kim - now how about explaining the "swishing"

Don't your pants make a swishing noise when you walk? Between that and my boots clomping, they hear me coming a mile away! There is no such thing as sneaking up on someone when I'm wearing my gear!

Have I ever mentioned how much I love New Enough? I came home yesterday to find it waiting for me. Paul stopped by for a bit and verified that he could really see me! Funny enough, it was super-foggy this morning which made it an easy choice to wear the jacket in to work today, and who would I pass on the way home? Paul! Tee hee
Anyway, here it is: Lots of fun features - I love the pocket on the left sleeve - and a really nice fit. This pic was before I had adjusted anything. I was able to pull the waist in quite a bit and tighten the arms and shorten the torso a bit. With the hubby turning off at an intersection, he was several hundred yards down the road when I road through the intersection in HEAVY fog this morning and he said he had no problem seeing me in the mirror I guess it really works!

works even better w/o all the tags flapping in the breeze.
great choice for visibility, but don't be surprised when some drivers don't see you, even with you glowing, while riding down the street. |
