Used ninjette prices

Hello!
I'm on a market for a new (to me) bike, and obviously ninjette came at the top of the candidates list. I started looking through the ads (facebook, craigslist, the obvious places) and got a feeling, that the sellers are high on something: maybe legalized marijuana is to blame, I don't know.. $3000 for a 2008 bike with over 10k miles, that was down couple of times with cracked/scratched fairings seems way too much to me. And there are many bikes priced like this.
Is it me, completely misunderstanding the market, or people are really overpricing their bikes?
What do you think?

for reference: I bought my then 3 year old ninjette with two hundred miles on the clock for $2400 few years back. I got lucky? I'm in NYC vicinity, if that matters

People always overprice their bikes to give some room for negotiation. Bikes that don't sell for long time tend to get relisted at lower price.

Don't rush and keep your eye on market. I set up automated alerts for specific criteria in ads and let it search for me. Took about 9-months and my perfect candidate turned up. A 2008 with 3450-miles for $1000! Went to look at it, hadn't ran in 3-yrs. Guy dumped it in parking-lot, lost interest and parked it. Had cracked, but not rashed fairing, battery dead, ignition wouldn't turn with key. I got it down to $700!

Trailered it home, sprayed PB-blaster down key hole, put spare battery in, sent off carbs to Ducatiman and I had perfectly-running low-miles bike for less than $900. Patience is key.

That's the kind of deal I'm looking for!
I know it can be hard to get and will take time, but was just amazed what people think their bikes worth..

Here's one on CA central-coast for $900. May be potential headgasket job, or may just need new battery.
Shipping is about $350-400 through one of freight outfits.

Depending upon how handy you are with tools, some great deals out there that just requires a little wrenching. I bought two 2003 pre-gens as bare frames and boxes of parts for $300. Built up one over a weekend for street bike and customizing 2nd one for race bike.

Sometimes you can buy two bikes: a totaled crashed bike with mangled frame for just engine and stuff that into 2nd bike with blown engine. With total cost lower than one complete bike.

Lets put it that way: if I'll need to rebuild the engine, it would not be the first time.

Thank you for your input!

My oldest son's first Ninja was a similar story. Guy bought it for his (now former) girlfriend in 2004. She put 250 miles on it, dropped it in the driveway, and decided riding wasn't for her. No major damage, just a signal lens.

We bought it in 2010, not running. Guy was asking $1000. Got it for $750. Needed tires and a carb cleaning.

The second Ninja was purchased from a member here that crashed it at 85 mph (had the wounds and ticket to prove it) for $150. No fairings, dented tank, but surprisingly fired right up after sitting quite a while. Also needed new tires (almost everything does IMO). Rode it over 5000 mi no problem.

This is not the best time to look for deals though. Cold/rainy weather is your friend.

Be quick - or it's gone!

Sounds like you can do mechanical work, so that opens-up a lot of possibilities. Non-running, but not blown-up (hopefully), bikes are common after storage without any prep. Just make sure they are cheap. If someone starts to tell you how simple it will be to get it running - forget it.

The reason I bought a brand new bike for my first ride was because of the prices in my area. IF one could find a used 300, asking prices were in the range of $4,000 to $6,000. Eg: a used Winter Test was on Craigslist a month before I bought mine for $6,000. I bought mine brand new for $5,331 OTD. The new models without ABS were going for $3,900 plus taxes and all that jazz. It just didn't make sense to me to buy a used bike.

I bought a 2001 250r with 11000 miles for $900 and thought I got a fair deal because of KBB values. Now I think I paid waaaay too much.

I look for 250 Ninja's everyday (pregens). I like turning them into cafe racers. What I see all the time are bikes way over priced. They never sell. Better off buying new if you are looking for a late model bike. Me I would not consider a 300 when the 400's are available for only a few bucks more.
Local NJ dealer has 300 for $52 a month, 400 for $62 a month and 650's for $76 a month nothing down. Me I pay cash, but $62 bucks a month

A quick search of Craigslist shows most of the pregens about $1700, that's an asking price so I'm sure you show up with $1,400 or $1,500 cash you ride off on a bike. 2nd gens are running $1,800-$2,300. Ninja 300's are running $3,000-$3,500. Again all asking prices.

But this is the worst time to buy a bike.

@michvin.....I'm currently working on an acquaintance black '07 250 which she intends to sell after my carb clean/get running. Its been sitting 5-6 years....a long story, which I'll go into via PM if you are interested.

Its black....very clean, nothing missing, it WILL be running within 24 hours from now.

Its got 211 miles on it. Yes, you read that right....just 211.

I'm on Long Island...you could pick it up. Let me contact her, establish a price. It'll be legitimate, based on my opinion and input.

My immediate tasks...carb/tank clean, verify petcock operational, new battery, change fluids....test ride when its ready. Note it is not registered at this time...she has a legit, clear NY title in hand.

PM me if you'd like further detail...I can provide pic when its completed, likely tomorrow.

I just sold a clean 2011with 24k km and 12 months rego for $1600AU or around $1200US.

I sold it within 3 days of advertising for the advertised price.

It's coming into winter here and sales are slow, plus not many people like the old carbie bikes anymore.

The best time for buying is generally always going to be coming into winter, I just picked up my new/old clean as low km zx6r when the weather was getting cold.

Plus when I turned up his missus was pushing him to sell so they can have more cash for a holiday they were just about to leave on, I used that info to low ball and wave some cash under her nose.

I sort of felt guilty in the end when the 2 young kids came out, but only for a minute.......the minute I rode off the joy pushed the guilt right away.

Just keep checking clist, alot of the good deals either go quick, or the seller is either incompetent or hard to get a hold of, but being persistent pays off. I got a pregen for $500 then ended up selling it 2 months later for $1000. Then I got my newgen for $2,000 with only 2,500 Miles on it. Being patient pays off. Dont get anything with over 20k miles on it imo.

Here's a 2010 with 6202 miles for $700 miles. Looks like someone started cafe conversion.

Or you can get the $150 complete bodywork set off eBay to restore back to stock. They've come a long way and are actually quite good nowadays. I got one as spare and all holes lined up! Even came with a solo-seat cover.

Looks and sounds decent. Price seems right.

We sold a low-mile 2004 in excellent cond with new tires for $2000 a couple years ago now.

I bought a 2003 Ninja 250 for $1000 today. It needs maybe an afternoon of work by a skilled DIYer (me) to get into usable shape. Didn't even have to haggle; it seemed like a reasonable price as it was.

My local craigslist is full of Ninja 250s under $3000. You even see a 300 sometimes.

I listed my pregen for $1500 and sold it for $1200 to a kid with a song and a story.

Built newgen engine. Modded out as a solid street bike that could be taken to the track comfortably. All spare parts (including spare bodywork) included in sale. New chain and sprockets. Running condition. Good to ride. All new fluids. The works. Literally just needed a rider.

I probably solid it for too little. But it was snowy January in western Ohio. I'll take what I can get.

I'd agree that fall/winter is the time to buy. I picked up a 2008 ninja 250 this past fall for $1000. It wouldn't start (as it sat for a 1.5 years ) Basic cleaning an up and running. Had 7200 miles on it. Right now everything is expensive. If you can, just keep looking until end of the season when prices start to drop.

Agree. After Labor Day and through February is a good time to look for a used bike on craigslist. Nobody else is thinking about a motorcycle at that time, they're thinking about school or football, thanksgiving, christmas, whatever.

Then after the holidays January and February are good months for good deals, you start getting into March and people start getting spring fever, then motorcycles, and watercraft start getting more in demand again.

During spring and summer there's a lot of competition, and while not impossible, it does require a lot more work. When looking at craigslist I look for bikes that disappear one day, and come back a day or two later. That usually means a sale fell through and the seller is moving into the "just take this bike off my hands" stage of ownership. And you can probably have more luck negotiating.

I also contact a bunch of sellers for bikes I'm interested in and let them know I have cash in hand, and I'm ready to spend X amount, and invite them to reach out to me if they are willing to settle for that amount of money to sell their bike quickly.
