Shifting Questions from a Nub.
Hey all. Been riding for about a month now and loving it big time!
But I have a few questions for you all. I'm trying to make my up/downshifts as smooth as poss. Or at least doing it right :P When shifting up from say 2nd to 3rd etc etc do you let off the throttle the whole way when the clutch is in? Then do you start to roll on again as you let go of the clutch? and should I be letting the clutch out realy slow??? Thanks all for spending the time to ready this and hopefully help me out. Peace all. Deejay AKA RaNmA. |

shifting questions always confuse me... And then I try to have to think about how I shift...
I think I semi match the throttle to when the clutch is released if that makes sense... but sometimes I shift into neutral and look like a dummy when I get to antsy and a dumbass wants to run me over in their car at a light because I lanesplit...

No, you shouldn't let the clutch out super slow. Once you get the hang of it shifting should take less than a second(literally). There will be times when the process is more lackadaisical but generally speaking it should be a fairly quick process.
Having said that I should also point out that since you are a new rider don't feel as if you have to rush things. Smooth, seamless shifting is just one of those things that you kinda just end up learning as you gain experience. Time in the saddle will make it happen, you can't force it. You want to be rolling on the throttle as you let the clutch out but not too soon..(a jerk forward motion)... and not too late..(engine bogs a little and it feels like someone applied a little brake). It's a "feel" thing and hard to express with words.

Clutch less is fun tho. Put pressure on the shifter release WOT and instantly go back to WOT like magic you are in the next gear

Clutchless up shifts are the sh**!!! I love it! But in slow city traffic it can be difficult at times. Haha. So I still use the clutch.
Yeah idk why there are so many questions on shifting. My guess, hardly anybody drives a manual car these days so when they get a bike the whole shifting your vehicle yourself thing just confuses them idk. I drive a manual car so when I got the bike it was just second nature. I picked it up instantly. |

dont let the clutch out slow but dont just let go either. Let the clutch out smoothly but fast if that makes any sense.

Everytime I do this, my bike jerks. It's not very smooth. Maybe I should try it at a higher speed?
... brb.

flick the throttle faster. it has to be off and back on again in an instant. whole thing takes around a quarter second at most

after writing that i payed closer attention to how long it takes... a quarter second is way slow. the big part is how quickly you can shut the throttle off, so snapping it up quickly is key. getting back on the gas quickly keeps it smooth.
