How to replace rear turn signals on the 250r?

Hi guys,

This is my first post on this forum so sorry if I'm posting in the wrong area. I've been looking around everywhere for guides on replacing the rear turn signals on my 2008 Ninja 250r, but I can't find one anywhere. I figured I might get the information I need by asking for help on a ninja dedicated forum.

This is my first bike, so I'm waaay at the bottom of the learning curve when it comes to hands on tool work with a motorcycle.

I ordered brand new OEM factory blinkers, which recently arrived today. I am not familiar with wiring or any electrical problems, which means I don't know how to connect the new ones in. I'm assuming there isn't any soldering work required?

I haven't done that change so I can't help you but I'm sure someone will be able to answer. My tail is slightly different than yours - I have three lamps all in the same section instead of "ears" sticking out.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to little bikes!

Hi and Welcome!

To replace lights:

1. Remove rear seat
2. Trace wiring from lights to connectors in boot.
3. Disconnect connector for both lights
4. Remove fixing screws at base of each light stalk
5. Pull lights out of brackets, be careful of yanking on wires

6. Thread wiring of new lights through bracket
7. Attach fixing screws at base of stalk
8. Clip connectors into harness

Hi, DannoXYZ! Thank you. I've found the original connector for the indicator, however my new indicator lights don't have a connector clip at the end, just two wires.

Ah, you've got aftermarket lights. OEM ones come with connector attached. Easy enough to install anyway. Chop off old connector from old lights about 4-5 cm from end so you've got some wiring to work with. Then use butt-splicing (western union joint) to attach to new lights.

Key ingredients are:

- mechanical strength (wrapping)
- solder
- heat-shrink wrap

It's done this way in pro motorsports, military and aerospace applications for performance and durability. There's NASA-spec guide somewhere I can pull up. Be sure to slide heat-shrink tubing on first!

Hi I haven't got a soldering kit. Would it be acceptable to just do it without soldering and applying electric tape? Otherwise I'll just bring it to a professional.

Sure, if you get strong tight wrap on both sides (1cm per side), electrical tape may work. Heat-shrink wrap would be better. Maybe expect 2-4 yrs with electrical tape. About 10-15 yrs with adhesive-lined heat-shrink wrap. And 30-50 yrs minimum with full NASA-spec, although we don't have pre-tinned wiring for corrosion resistance.

If you are near Kellihers or EWL store, you can easily pick up some heat-shrink wrap for much more durable joint. Or complete soldering kit. If you plan on keeping bike for while, there will certainly be other needs for soldering in future.

dont know if you have done installed yet but have you thought about crimping them on with butt connectors? can find them at any auto store as well as a cheap crimping tool. thats how i do all my electrical work. its super easy.

Don't just twist the wires together and heat shrink it. It might last for awhile, or it might not, and then you'll be chasing electrical gremlins again. Use a butt splice and crimp them, then put heat shrink over the splice.

If you need a crimping tool, you can get a tool like https://www.amazon.com/VISE-GRIP-Mul.../dp/B000JNNWQ2 for under $15. It's not the best type of crimper, but it's a good quality tool and will get the job done.

Hi, sorry for the slow reply. I managed to fix the problem using your method. I used heat shrink butt connectors. Lights are working fine now.

Thank you so much for the help!
