Clutch Replacement

Clutch is shot and the local guy wants 300 Euro for a new clutch kit. I see one online for $300. I'd love to pay in dollars because the Euro rate is horrible. Is there any difference between the euro model and the US models? It's a '98 EX250 Euro Spec. Also, would you recommend getting the whole kit, or just the friction/steel plates? I'm the 3rd or 4th owner but it's most likely never been raced or "beaten". Neglected perhaps...but not killed.

What is wrong with the clutch?

I guess they all have same specs.

Just remember, depending on how you get it into Italy, you may be liable for import and customs, which could add up to more than the savings of the Euro vs Dollar price.

Saxnbass,

We have a US mail address (US Air Force) so no worries as long as the company ships USPS.

Motofool,

The problem is when it gets up to operating temp, the clutch slips more than a greased banana on a hockey rink. I don't want to pay the euro price if I don't have to.

Do you think there are any differences? Do you think it's worth it to just get the clutch plates or should I get the entire kit?

the ninja sometimes slips the clutches if the springs are worn. thats whats happening with my bike. the clutches are supposed to be a lifetime thing.

MrCycles has springs for $4 a piece...is it worth it do you think to just pull it and replace the springs? Well, for that matter I'd be able to tell if the friction plates are worn and the steel plates as well.

First thing to check is total disengagement of the clutch cable.
There should be some slack at the lever that enters the clutch cover.
Something elementary but many times overlooked

You don't need to pay for all the parts of the clutch (and shipment weight); new plates and springs will suffice.

Oil with additives can create deposits between the plates that reduce the coefficient of friction greatly.

If you have been using oil labelled as "Energy Conserving" or EC, then your problem may be solved by simply changing the oil to non-EC synthetic oil.

Once the plates start slipping among them, the temperature may rise enough to compromise the flatness of the metal plates and the strength of the springs.

If you disassemble the clutch and can measure the springs and compare length with new ones (or with repair manual specs) you can determine if the springs have weakened and need to be replaced (has became shorter).

Gotcha, that's why I said depending on how. Aviano I assume? I was in Vicenza for 10 years.

And if the company doesn't ship USPS, there is always ShipItAPO.com

Motofool,

Thanks so much for the advice :thumbsup ! I'll order the springs and plates then. I wouldn't have the foggiest what oil is in there. Probably dinosaur. She'll get some Royal Purple though.

Saxnbass,

You're correct! Aviano until July...then we're off to Minot...possibly. There's an issue with taking our dependents (as in they're not allowed due to a shortage in housing) but we're exploring some options. It's a mess...
