Blue tires?

I was talking to my coworker the other day (he rides a r6) And used to do a lot of track. He was telling me how the chick strip area of a tire sometimes turns blue. I remember him saying because of the tire heating up the cooling down then heating up then cooling down....

Well today was the first time ive ridden since my crash (4 days ago) and when i got to work I noticed my tire was blue...

I do a lot of canyon runs so I am really hard on my tires, but its been a week and a half since my last canyon run, what would cause them to turn blue like this?

Oh wow! How strange.

When I saw the title I thought you were going to be talking about these tyres:

Cool huh! I want tyres like that for my Ninjette.

Your coworker is right. Blueing is a result of the rubber composition changing in the tire and can be caused most commonly by heat cycles. It usually results in the tire hardening and you would not be able to get the normal traction you would out of those tires. If you are running a quick pace (hopefully not on the street) I would recommend swapping them out. If you are strictly commuting it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

pretty sure you're fine, but i'm no expert... you see this on track tires all the time. the google says it's from the heat cycling of the rubber and that it only slightly decreases grip

Im starting to do track soon, but yes I run them pretty hard in the canyon right now My co worker says to dump them and get a new tire... Guess I may have to buy a new tire soon before I do any canyon runs

Do you think part of the reason I went down last week is because the tire was like this? (its blue on the side I went down on....)

I think adding oil into the situation would be the culprit as far as your loss of traction. The blueing, it seems, can cause some traction loss but it would be marginal in comparison. how many miles have you put on these tires?

WOW. Jesus did you ride through an oil slick or an oil tanker spill?! To have that much oil on the ground I would almost want to say okay...who dumped oil on the ground to watch people fall?

Unless of course it's not oil and it is squid ink

I wouldbet money it was not oil but coolant, you put that blue ice stuff in and when you went down it leaked. When it dried it turned more blue. I only say this as I have never seen oil blue nor be dry like that. Just my 2 cents

The flame is blue the oil is not but I could be wrong, looking at how it's dried I would put 100 bucks on it being coolant.

That scooter's tire tread pattern clearly wasn't design with function first.

I agree actually, it was pretty dry when I wiped it off. Why the **** was coolant on the ground?!

The moisture and oils in the tire itself exude out when they have been heated and cooled rapidly. The bluing can be scrubbed off and the tire should work just as well as if it hadn't blued.

listen to the track junkies

thats oil from the tire itself from the many heat cycles and hard canyon runs

doesnt make sense for coolant to spray forward against the wind
